The 1999 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on September 9, 1999. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 13, 1998 to June 11, 1999. The award ceremony took place at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, New York. Chris Rock was the moderator .

The winner of the evening was Lauryn Hill , who won a total of four awards, including the main prize Video of the Year .

The biggest scandal happened at the awarding of the Best Hip-Hop Video . During the ceremony Diana Ross touched Lil Kim's breast, which was bared except for a pastie .

In between there were a few mishaps: Paul McCartney presented the Video of the Year award and called Lauryn Hill "a guy named Lawrence Hill". The appearance of various drag queens , which was supposed to represent a kind of tribute to Madonna , was also a bit strange . During the Viewer's Choice Awards ceremony, a man stormed the stage shouting "Wake up at 3" before being overwhelmed by security.

A significant, conciliatory gesture was the presentation of the Best Rap Video, which was presented by the mothers of the murdered rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG together with Will Smith . The two mothers hugged on the stage. The two rappers were considered mortal enemies during their lifetime. Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys responded to sexual assault at Woodstock '99 in his speech .
