Cidade Negra is a Brazilian music group from Rio de Janeiro .

The group is the most successful dub band in Brazil . Their first album was a success and they got a contract with Sony . The second record was a flop - the issue of the rights of the black population was seen as the reason. Sony demanded concessions to the market, which led to a falling out with singer Sebastião Francisco Bernardo, who left the band in 1994. The new singer Toni Garrido was considered less charismatic, the lyrics became less clear, but the success of Cidade Negra increased. The video for the next single reached number two on the MTV charts in Brazil and the following album sold more often than the previous combined. Famous musicians such as Mad Professor , Aswad , Lee Perry , Sly & Robbie and U-Roy mixed their greatest hits on the Hits & Dubs record .

Singer Toni Garrido played Orfeu in Carlos Diegues remake of Orfeu Negro in 1999 .
