U-Roy (* 21st September 1942 as Ewart Beckford in Jones Town , Jamaica ) is a reggae musician. He is also known as The Originator , Father of Deejaying, or Hugh Roy .

Career

His career started in 1961 as U-Roy DJ in sound system Doctor Dickies , Sir George the Atomic and Hometown Hi-fi by King Tubby . When King Tubby began to experiment with dub or dubplates from 1967 (i.e. songs in which the original vocal track was removed), U-Roy was involved as its most prominent DJ and singer (see also Toasting ) in the invention of dub reggae. This new style became extremely popular and developed into one of the major styles of reggae. U-Roy became a Jamaican celebrity.

U-Roy 's first own recordings, Earth's Rightful Ruler and OK Corral , were produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry , then he recorded Dynamic Fashion Way with Keith Hudson. He also worked with almost all other producers on the island, such as Peter Tosh , Bunny Lee, Phil Pratt, Sonia Pottinger , Rupie Edwards, Alvin Ranglin and Lloyd Daley.

His fame continued to grow when U-Roy landed his first own big hit with Wake the Town in 1970 , quickly followed by Rule The Nation and Wear You to The Ball , all produced by Duke Reid . He became one of the biggest stars of the 1970s in Jamaica and also gained great fame in the UK, where he made his first appearance in 1976.

In the 80s there was a certain calm, but in 1991 he made his comeback in London with a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon and he regained the importance it had since then.
