King Tubby
King Tubby (born January 28, 1941 in Kingston , Jamaica , † February 6, 1989 ), whose real name was Osbourne Ruddock , was a Jamaican reggae sound engineer with his own studio. He significantly influenced the development of dub .
Life
Osbourne Ruddock, born in Kingston in 1941, initially worked as an "electronic engineer", ie he repaired everything from radio to television that was generated in his area. In 1968 he founded his Home Town HiFi sound system and stood out from the crowd of sound systems created at that time through the use of his unique reverb and echo effect devices. Tubby's first dub track came about by chance, because Ruddock, who was then employed as a dubplate cutter for Duke Reid and his Treasure Isle label, mistakenly omitted parts of the vocal track of a tune. Another explanation says that he deliberately left out the music track (at that time it was still recorded using the two-track method) for a few bars to check whether the singer had actually hit the note. However, he liked this "mistake" or the effect that was triggered by the repeated music track. More precisely, he was so enthusiastic about it that he began to develop his own musical style from it.
Working together with Edwart Beckford, better known as U-Roy , who answered Tubby's instrumental dubs with vocal interjections, in turn produced a new style of reggae music, toasting (the forerunner of today's rap and deejaying). Tubby set up a small studio in Waterhouse (Kingston) in 1972, in which he first experimented with various effects processors, combined them with equalizers and thus produced a new sound that was unattainable at the time. At this time he began to work increasingly with other producers, such as Bunny Lee or Lee “Scratch” Perry , with whom he completed the stereo dub album “Blackboard Jungle Dub” in 1973. 1974 Tubby worked a lot with Bunny Lee, who recorded many of his artists, including Cornell Campbell and Johnny Clarke at Tubby in the studio. In the mid-1970s, King Jammy took over as an engineer in Tubby's studio, and later Overton "Scientist" Brown. Tubby worked steadily on his new studio, which he completed in the early 80s and then landed his first big hit in 1986 with Anthony Red Rose's "Temper" (aka Tempo).
In 1989, Osbourne Ruddock was shot dead by a mugger at the age of 48. His labels include: Waterhouse, Firehouse, Taurus, Kingston 11
