Augustus Pablo (born June 21, 1954 in Saint Andrew , Jamaica as Horace Swaby ; † May 18, 1999 , Kingston ) was a Jamaican reggae and dub musician and producer.

biography

Pablo learned to play the organ early on at Kingston College School . During his school days he met Clive Chin , whose father Vincent Chin was the owner of the famous record store "Randy's" in Kingston .

In 1969, through these relationships, he got the chance to record his first record called Iggy Iggy . After a few more recordings, he made his breakthrough with the song East of the River Nile . Shortly thereafter, he joined Mikey Chung's band Now Generation as keyboardist , while his friend Clive started his own career as a producer.

In 1972 he left the band and took on with Clive Java , which was also a success and initiated his solo career. He worked with various other producers, including Leonard Chin (Clive's uncle) and Lee Perry . He had another hit with John Holt's My Desire .

Pablo founded the labels "Message" and "Rockers" (named after his brother's sound system ). In the 1970s he released a large number of hits both as a solo artist and as a producer until his career ebbed in the 1980s. On May 18, 1999, the self-confessed Rastafarian died in Kingston University Hospital , Jamaica, as a result of the nervous disease myasthenia gravis caused by lung failure.

style

He created his own sound, which is unusual for the genre, with his instrument, the melodica , a harmonica instrument with a keyboard .

Many pieces contain a solo play, often in a minor key, on calm dub beats, which gives his music a melancholy character.
