The presentation of the MTV Video Music Awards 1994 took place on September 8, 1994. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 16, 1993 to June 15, 1994. The award ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall , New York City , New York . The moderator was Roseanne Barr .

The winner of the evening was REM , whose video for Everybody Hurts received four moonmen in the technical categories. This was closely followed by Aerosmith , who also topped this list with nine nominations, and Salt-N-Pepa with three awards each. Aersomith's Cryin ' won the two main prizes Video of the Year and Viewer's Choice, making it only the second video to have achieved this. The first was INXS ' Need You Tonight / Mediate at the 1988 MTV Video Music Awards . 1994 was the last year in which the Video of the Year and Viewer's Choice categories coincided.

The show's biggest sensation was a public kiss from Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley following Jackson's introduction. It was actually a marketing gimmick devised by Jackson's managers to counter rumors about Jackson's pedophilia . Another notable moment was when David Letterman, in response to Madonna's scandalous appearance on his Late Show , asked her to watch out for her language. This was the first joint public appearance of the two
