Chico Science (actually Francisco de Assis França ; born March 13, 1966 in Olinda , † February 2, 1997 in Recife ) was a Brazilian musician.

Life

Chico Science and his band Nação Zumbi were one of the founders of the Mangue Beat , a style that combines traditional forms of music from the Brazilian northeast such as Forró and Maracatú with modern elements such as funk and hip-hop . His music has been influenced by James Brown , Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow , among others .

Initially, Chico Science was a member of the Orla Orbe and Loustal groups . Around 1991 he founded Nação Zumbi and, together with Fred 04 , the singer of the group Mundo Livre S / A , wrote the Mangue-Beat-Manifesto Caranguejos Com Cerebros ("Crabs with a brain"). The band received a lot of attention on tours through North America and Europe and was considered one of the most innovative Brazilian bands of the 1990s. Chico Science was said to have a strong stage presence. Chico Science & Nação Zumbi recorded two music albums: Da Lama ao Caos (1994) and Afrociberdelia (1996).

Chico Science died in a traffic accident in Recife at the age of 30. After his death, Nação Zumbi recorded four more albums.
