Mangue Beat , also Manguebeat , is a musical movement from the northeast of Brazil , in the state of Pernambuco . Mangue Beat was created as a direction of Brazilian music by the bands Chico Science and Nação Zumbi as well as Mundo Livre S / A in the late 1980s. The bands based in the capital Recife mix regional music styles such as Côco , Ciranda , Embolada, Maracatú with global sounds such as New Wave , Rap , Funk , Soul and so on. The aim of the Mangue movement is to combine the rich regional traditions with current elements of global musical trends in order to revive one's own musical traditions and to strengthen local self-confidence. There was a similar approach in tropicalismo of the 1960s. The song lyrics criticize the socio-economic situation and the injustices in the population.

The term Mangue Beat originated as a metaphor for the cultural and musical richness in Recife, because Recife was built on mangrove swamps and the Manguezais represent a productive ecosystem in the region. First the musical movement was called Mangue Bit and was then joined by journalists from the south Brazil to Mangue Beat .
