The MTV Video Music Awards 1991 were presented on September 5, 1991. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 2, 1990 to June 15, 1991. The ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . Arsenio Hall was the moderator .

The winner of the evening was REM , who received a total of six trophies for Losing My Religion , including the award for Video of the Year. With ten nominations, they also topped the nomination list.

A new Moonmen was introduced with the Best Long Form Video , but it wasn't continued until 2016 with the Breakthrough Long Form Video . The “Best Post-Modern Video” award has been renamed “ Best Alternative Video ”. The “Video Vanguard Award” has been renamed the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” in honor of Michael Jackson .

The excitement of the year was the appearance of Prince , whose outfit showed a bare bottom.
