Emotions is a song by the American singer Mariah Carey . It was written and produced by Mariah Carey and the C + C Music Factory . The song appeared on Carey 's album of the same name (1991). It was released as the album's first single in the third quarter of 1991. In the disco- influenced song, the protagonist shows a variety of emotions, from a good mood to a bad mood, to the point where she sings "you got me feeling emotions" - after that Carey only sings high notes and experiments with her singing techniques for which she is known.

background

Carey worked with C + C Music Factory , they composed the song You're So Cold , which Carey should release as the first single. However, a second recording session made Carey think that Emotions was a better choice for the first single. So Emotions was finally released as the first single.

composition

Emotions is a disco- influenced pop track. Carey's vocal range extends over four octaves in the song, from C 3 to E 7 . The song is the first in which Carey experiments extensively with her vocal range, melismatic singing and her whistle register .

success

Emotions became Mariah Carey's fifth number one hit in a row in the United States, making her the only one to date to achieve the feat of having all of the first five singles on the American Billboard Hot 100 number one hits (breaking the record of the The Jackson 5 ). From October 6 to October 26, 1991, the song spent three weeks at number 1. The song sparked Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch feat. Loleatta Holloway off the top and got misplaced from the top by Karyn White's number one hit Romantic . In 1991 Emotions reached number 22 in the American annual charts. For the high sales figures, the song was honored with a gold record in the United States.

Outside the United States, the song became Carey's most successful single since her debut with Vision of Love . It reached the top 5 in Canada and New Zealand and the UK top 20. In Australia the song just missed the top ten and in the rest of Europe the song was a moderate chart success.

At the 1992 Grammy Awards , Emotions was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but lost to Something to Talk About by Bonnie Raitt . The song won a BMI R&B Award, so Carey continued her series, before each of her singles also won the same BMI Award.
