Emotions (in English: " Emotionen ") is the second studio album by the American singer Mariah Carey . It was released on September 17, 1991 on Columbia Records . Carey worked on the album with various producers, including Walter Afanasieff , the only one who was also involved in the previous album . In addition, she wrote and released the album with Robert Clivillés and David Cole of C + C Music Factory and Carole King , with the latter she wrote a piece.
Emergence
After the success of the first album, some critics wondered whether Mariah Carey could repeat the success with the successor. There was also the question of whether she could go on tours around the world in view of the difficulty of the song material.
In December 1990 she began recording the second album. During the work, Carey also had an argument with Ben Margulies , with whom she had worked on the debut, whereupon they went their separate ways.
Criticism and success
The album got mixed reviews. It nonetheless rose to number four on the Billboard 200 . Although sales were lower than the debut album, the album went quadruple platinum through the Recording Industry Association of America . In Australia , Canada , the Netherlands , France , New Zealand , Norway and the United Kingdom , it reached the top ten of the respective charts, in Germany it was 46th. The title song, which was also the lead single, was Carey's fifth number one single in the USA.
Awards
Carey received an American Music Award for Favorite Soul / R & B Female Artist for the album . She also received two Billboard Music Awards for "Top Female Album Artist" and "Top Female Single". She was also nominated for two Grammy Awards , for the "Producer of the Year" and the "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance", which she could not win. All three singles received 1993 BMI Awards .
