background

Mariah Carey's debut album was completed after she wrote Love Takes Time with Ben Marguiles . Marguiles said, “We quickly made a demo recording. It was a piano vocal recording - I played the piano and Mariah Carey sang. "

On a mini tour, Carey presented the acoustic piano version with three background singers. Mariah Carey later introduced Love Takes Time to Columbia Records President Don Ienner. “Everyone important was involved,” Marguiles recalls. "Tommy Mottola, Ienner and Bobby Colomby." Carey described the song as a "career maker" and it should appear on her debut album.

Mariah Carey gave the demo recording to producer Walter Afanasieff . When Carey flew to California to work with Narada Michael Walden on more songs from their debut album, Tommy Mottola and Don Ienner were impressed with Afanasieff's work as a producer and gave him a job as a producer at Columbia Records.

“One day he (Tommy) calls me,” Afanasieff recalls. “He said, 'We have to finish the Mariah Carey album, but there is a song that she wrote with Ben Marguiles, the song is phenomenal and I will try everything to get the song on the album. I said 'what should I do for you?' and he said 'You only have a few days but are you ready to produce the song?' I couldn't believe that this was my chance to become a producer. I never produced anything real until that time. "

According to Afanasieff, the demo recording was exactly what Mottola wanted. “We produced the music in a day. We had to produce the song that day or it wouldn't have appeared on Carey's debut album. We took the recording and produced everything, then took a plane to New York City where we recorded Carey's vocals in a studio. Carey has been preparing for her vocal recording all night. Her singing was recorded on several tracks, so she also took over the background vocals on her own. "

When the album was released, Love Takes Time was not listed on some CDs and tapes. "On some of the first copies of the album, there wasn't enough time to put the name of the song on the album," laughs Marguiles. "That's the song on the album, but the tracklist doesn't say the song is on the album."

The music video was directed by Jeb Brien and Walter Maser. In the music video, Mariah Carey walks on a beach after her boyfriend left her. The music video was shot in Venice Beach , Los Angeles . The music video did not appear on Carey's video album # 1’s (1999), instead the song was performed live at the Proctor's Theater in New York City in 1993.
