I Don't Wanna Cry is a song by the American singer Mariah Carey . The song was written by her and Narada Michael Walden and produced by Walden. It appeared on Carey's debut album Mariah Carey (1990). The ballad was released as the fourth single from the album in March 1991. The song became another number one hit for Mariah Carey in the United States. Like the previous singles, I Don't Wanna Cry received a BMI Pop Award.

background

I Don't Wanna Cry was Carey's first song that she did not write with Ben Margulies. When Carey and Walden wrote the song Carey was excited, according to her, it felt like the song was going to be a huge hit on the radio stations. Due to bad experiences during production and because Carey thought the song had no message, Carey stated in an interview with MTV that she does not like the song and rarely tries to sing the song in front of an audience. Carey wanted to co-produce the song with Walden, but since the two argued a few times during production, Carey later let Walden do the sole production, eventually becoming Carey's favorite producer on her debut album.

Music video

The Director for the music video led Larry Jordan. The music video shows Mariah Carey in a dark apartment, where she is processing their relationship.

The music video and another music video for the song were released on Carey's video album The First Vision (1991), as well as on her video album # 1’s (1999). The music video was the only one from her debut album that was released on # 1’s .

Charts

I Don't Wanna Cry was Mariah Carey's fourth consecutive number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 , and that success made her the second artist (and first female and first solo artist) after the Jackson 5 , which was hers the first four singles to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The huge success made the album Mariah Carey a record album: every single that was released from the album became a number one hit in the United States. Nobody has succeeded in doing this before. I Don't Wanna Cry spent two weeks at No. 1 from May 19 to June 1, 1991. The song replaced I Like the Way (The Kissing Game) from the Hi-Fives at the top. Carey's number one hit was eventually replaced by Extremes More Than Words . The song was one of four Carey songs that made it into the US annual charts in 1991, the song ranked 26th. Outside the United States, the song reached number 7 in Canada and number 49 in Australia.
