Emergence

Mariah Carey sings Always Be My Baby live in Las Vegas in September 2009.

While Carey was producing and recording her album Daydream in the spring of 1995, she was looking for various producers who would give her music a new style. Jermaine Dupri , who became famous during this time, began working with Carey on new material for her album. After the song was recorded in December 1994, Carey explained that she wanted to work with Dupri, since it "a good sense of good and commercial music has" . In addition, Carey worked with producer Manuel Seal, who had shaped the hip hop and contemporary modern R&B sound of the song and the record Daydream . When Seal was playing something on the piano, Carey thought of the melody of the song and she sang “always be my baby.” In an interview with Fred Bronson, Carey explained the process of creating the song:

Jermaine, Manuel and I were together and Jermaine programmed the drums. I told him everything I wanted and Manuel put his hands on the piano and I started singing the melody that suddenly came into my head. This enabled us to produce the whole song as a trio in a short time. I knew that Always be my baby would be very successful for me and my fans.

The song was also heavily influenced by Carey's various vocal registers, which were inserted as background vocals, so Carey sings and whistles the higher notes over the background vocals and the melody, creating a "double vocal effect ". About the double vocals, Carey said:

The background and whistle singing are an important part of me. I love to sing like that and to skillfully use my singing techniques and diversity, that's how everyone knows me and that's how I want to stay. These techniques increase the recognition value of my songs. I first record my singing and then I sing several times over my singing with higher notes and this creates my double singing, many describe something like this as difficult, but for me it is the easiest ..... And before I let other background singers sing I invite everyone that I am better and that I am at the top.

success

After its release, Always Be My Baby made its debut on April 6, 1996 at number two on the American Billboard Hot 100 . The following week the song reached number one on the American charts for four weeks, after which the song spent another five weeks at number two. Overall, the song spent nine weeks in second place in the United States, the fourth most time on a song ever. After her song had spent two weeks at number one in the US, all three Daydream singles were number one on the American charts for over 26 weeks.
