album The Emancipation of Mimi

We Belong Together is a song by Mariah Carey that was recorded for her tenth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi from 2005 and was released on March 29, 2005 as the second single on the album. The song was written and produced by Carey, Jermaine Dupri , Manuel Seal and Johntá Austin and is inspired by the R&B and soul of the 1980s. The Billboard magazine recorded the song as the most successful of the decade from, based on sales, radio appearances and downloads.

After a career break from 2001 and 2005, Carey had worldwide success with her single We Belong Together , which peaked in Australia and the US (for 14 weeks). In the United States, the song broke many airplay records and received many good reviews. The song also won Carey several Grammy Awards in 2006. The Billboard lists We Belong Together as the eleventh most successful song of all time. (As of 2015)

Background and origin

We Belong Together was not originally intended to be produced for The Emancipation of Mimi . After a career break, Carey began working on her album in 2004. The album was ready in November of that year, but Carey wanted to produce more songs for this album. LA Reid , the head of Island Records , hired Carey for studio recordings with producer Jermaine Dupri . Mariah Carey flew to Dupri's studio in Atlanta for two days , they composed and produced two songs for The Emancipation of Mimi ( Shake It Off and Get Your Number ), then flew back to New York City ; At the time, We Belong Together was not yet written. Reid was impressed with the new songs and decided that Carey should fly back to Atlanta to produce more songs.

In two days Carey, Dupri, Seal and Austin produced the first We Belong Together single : It's like That . The producers discussed the melody of the song for a long time and finally began to work.

Music and structure

We Belong Together is a pop ballad with influences from hip-hop , R&B and soul . The song contains tracks from a Roland TR-808 stylized bass drum and hi-hat , which are often used in hip-hop music.

Carey used a rap singing style for which she got the most reviews. Jennifer Vineyard commented that Carey's rap singing gave the song even more power. The song is similar to Boby Womack's 1980s retro soul song If You Think You're Lonely Now from 1981 and The Deele's Two Occasions (from 1987 with Babyface ). In the second verse of We Belong Together Carey sings: “Bobby Womack's on the radio / Singing to me, 'If you think you're lonely now'.” Then she continues: “So I turn the dial, tryin 'to catch a break / And then I hear Babyface / 'I only think of you…'. "

We Belong Together contains a very simple musical arrangement: it plays on the C-clef and is composed in quarter notes . Similar to the song, Carey's voice stretches from G 3 to A 5 . Carey ends the song by singing C 5 . It follows the main verse - chorus form and is divided into three sections so that it has an emotional effect on the listener.

Remixes and other versions

Mariah Carey often recorded remixed versions of her successful songs, some of which were even more successful than the original song. For We Belong Together she recorded a DJ Clue Remix, which was produced by DJ Clue and the rappers Jadakiss and Styles P and the Rauhofer Reconstruction Mix / Atlantic Soul Vocal Mix. The remixes are all very different from each other and contain more elements of hip-hop music. For example, the Atlantic Soul Vocal Mix created a synthetic bass line, a piano and guitar line and hi-hats that give the song more tempo with a fast beat.

Both remix versions were released as download in May 2005 and were successful: The Atlantic Soul Mix reached number 1 in the US dance charts and the DJ Clue version reached number 5 in the Hot Digital Songs charts.

Music video

The music video was directed by Brett Ratner , the music video was recorded in Los Angeles . It is the sequel to the music video for It's Like That , the first single from The Emancipation of Mimi . The music video begins with the end of It's like That video, the protagonist is at a party where one of the guests poses as Carey's lover (played by Wentworth Miller ). The video for We Belong Together begins the following morning when the protagonist, Carey, reminds her boyfriend as she has been preparing for a relationship. As she goes for a walk, the protagonist watches Carey along with her current boyfriend (played by Eric Roberts ). In the wedding scene, Carey wears the wedding dress by designer Vera Wang , which she wore in real life in 1993 during the wedding celebrations with Tommy Mottola.

The video reached # 1 on all video charts including BET's 106 & Park , MTV's TRL (where it was # 1 for 50 days), MuchMusic 's Countdown and VH1's VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown . VH1 ranked the video # 1 in 2005 Best Videos. On July 25, 2005, it became Launchcast's Most Watched Video of 2005 with 7.5 million viewers and views. The video was nominated for Best R&B Video and Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards 2005 .

Criticism and Commercial Success

After fans and critics suspected the end of their career after Carey's hiatus, We Belong Together rose to become one of the most successful pop singles of all time and thus became Carey's most commercially successful song.

Reviews

Unlike Carey's other successful songs, We Belong Together got all the good reviews, Rolling Stone says, "The song is an 'innovative' Mariah Carey who is better than ever" The song got other reviews because of Carey's vocal style. Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times says the rap singing takes away the beautiful side of the song. The Billboard magazine and Johnny Loftus of Metro Times described the song as "perfect," "class," and "modern" while Pitchfork Media gave it four stars and a half.

Billboard placed We Belong Together at # 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs and # 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 R & B / Hip-Hop Songs. Blender placed it on 15 of the 100 Best Songs of 2005. Slant Magazine placed it on # 2 of the Best Songs of 2005.

Because the song got good reviews from fans and critics, We Belong Together also got good reviews from UKMusic's Helen Duong , who describes the song as "tender," and reviews from Virgin.net who describe the song as boring, cheesy and uninspired.

Commercial win

Between her career break from 2001 to 2004, Carey's popularity declined, which is why many of her fans and critics feared the end of their careers. After the single was released in the US on March 26, 2005, We Belong Together became the biggest hit in Carey's career and for her record label. The song spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005 - after debuting at number 81 - and on the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs chart. Then the success got even bigger: The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Hot 100 Airplay, Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Airplay, Pop 100 Airplay, Top 40 Mainstream, Rhythmic Airplay Chart , Hot Dance Club Songs and the Hot Ringtones Charts. A week later it became the first song to top all the US charts. We Belong Together broke all airplay records in the USA. To date, We Belong Together has been played over 8 million times on the radio in the United States alone. He has been awarded platinum twice by the RIAA . On the 2005 Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart , the song was the first in Carey's career to reach the top spot. The song was named the most successful song of the 2000s by Billboard Magazine .

We Belong Together was also a huge success worldwide, debuting at number 1 on the Australian charts where it stayed for two weeks and reaching number 2 in New Zealand for three weeks. The song received its strongest promotion in Great Britain, where it was at number 2 debuted behind 2pacs Ghetto Gospel . The song was a success across Europe. He reached the top five in Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland, the top ten in Norway and the top twenty in France, Belgium, Sweden, Italy and Germany.
