Aleksejs Širokovs (born February 20, 1981 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Olimp Riga in the Latvian ice hockey league since July 2019 .
Career
Širokovs started his career in his hometown at HK Pardaugava Riga . With the exception of the 1999/2000 season, which he spent at Dinamo '81 Riga , he played from 1998 for HK Liepājas Metalurgs , with whom he was twice Latvian champion and in 2002 won the East European Hockey League .
In the 2003/04 season he went on the ice in Serie A for SG Cortina . He then moved to the second-rate Russian Wysschaya League to Amur Khabarovsk . With Amur he reached the semi-finals of the league in 2005, in which his team failed at HK MWD Twer . In the following season Širokovs completed 18 games for Kapitan Stupino in the Wysschaja Liga as well as two games in the Russian Super League with their partner team, HK Dynamo Moscow , before he was committed by Metallurg Novokuznetsk .
Via Chimik Moskowskaja Oblast he came to Belarus to Metallurg Schlobin in 2007 , for which he completed 53 games in the Belarusian extra league, in which he scored 40 points. Before the 2008/09 season he was obliged by the newly founded KHL participant Dinamo Riga , for whom he scored ten points in 48 KHL games. At times he was also the team captain of the Balts. In the summer of 2009 he returned to Amur Khabarovsk . In early October 2010, his contract with Amur was terminated and Širokovs first played in Latvia for HK Ozolnieki / Monarhs , before he received a trial contract with Lukko Rauma from the SM-liiga in November 2010 . This was not extended, at the beginning of January 2011 he was signed by HC Kometa Brno from the Czech Extra League.
For the 2011/12 season he moved to the Kazakh club Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk , which took part in the game operations of the Vysschaya Hockey League . This was followed by two years at HC Red Ice from Martigny , with the Širokovs in the National League B played. In the 2014/15 season he was active for a total of four different clubs - first for HK Prizma Riga , then for HK Njoman Hrodna and HK Schachzjor Salihorsk (both from the Belarusian extra league) and finally for HK Kurbads from the Latvian ice hockey league . With HK Njmona Hrodna he won the IIHF Continental Cup 2014/15 , with HK Kurbads he was Latvian runner-up.
Between 2015 and 2017, Širokovs was again under contract in the Wysschaja Hockey League, initially with Zvezda Chekhov until January 2016 and then with Neftjanik Almetyevsk until the end of the 2016/17 season . With Almetyevsk, he won the Bratina Cup in 2016 , the championship trophy of the Vysschaya Hockey League. In July 2017 he left Almetyevsk and was signed by HK Mogo , with whom he played in the Latvian ice hockey league and won the Latvian ice hockey cup in 2018. Before the 2018/19 season, he moved to Prizma Riga within the league before he was signed by the Dresdner Eislöwen from the DEL2 in February 2019 .
International
Aleksejs Širokovs began his international career in the U18 national junior team, with which he took part in a total of three international tournaments - two European and one world championships. From 199 he also played for the Latvian U20 national team , with the Širokovs participated in the U20 B World Championships in 1999 and 2000 and the U20 World Cup in Division I in 2001 .
In April 2000 he made his debut for the Latvian men's national team , with which he participated in a large number of international tournaments in the following years. These included the World Championships in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2012 , 2013 and 2016 . At the 2016 World Cup, with 29 penalty minutes, he was the player with the most penalty minutes of the entire tournament.
In addition, he qualified with the national team at the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and finished twelfth at the Olympic tournament in Vancouver .
In total, Širokovs had played 182 international matches by February 2019, in which he scored 30 goals and prepared 23 more.
