Vera Wang

Vera Wang (born June 27, 1949 in New York City ) is an American fashion designer of Chinese descent. She is known for her extravagant clothes, but especially for her wedding dresses.

Life

Wang attended The Chapin School in Manhattan and then studied at Sarah Lawrence College and the Sorbonne in Paris. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in art history. Wang began ice skating as a child and took part in the US figure skating championships in 1968. After failing to qualify for the Olympic team, Wang moved into the fashion industry. She worked for fashion magazine Vogue for 16 years and moved to Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation for two years in 1985 . Wang worked there as a design director.

In 1990 she opened her own fashion studio in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City . In addition to wedding dresses, she also designed jerseys for figure skating. Nancy Kerrigan won the silver medal in a jersey designed by Wang at the 1994 Olympics .

Wang designed the wedding dresses for Mariah Carey , Jennifer Lopez , Victoria Beckham , Sharon Stone , Heidi Klum , Holly Hunter and Chelsea Clinton, among others . In 2001 her book Vera Wang on Weddings was published by Harper Collins in New York. In June 2005, she won the Womenswear Designer of the Year title from the Council of the Fashion Designers of America . On May 27, 2006, Wang received the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design .

In addition to her clothing line, Wang also designs nightwear, glasses, perfumes and shoes.

Wang was married from 1989 to 2012 and has two daughters.

Wang has a guest appearance on the series "GossipGirl" (season 5, episode 11). 2006 also in the series Ugly Betty.
