The Sarah Lawrence College is a private college in the United States . It is located in Westchester County , New York , about 15 miles north of Manhattan. The college is one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the USA.
The college was in 1926 by real estate - Tycoon William Van Duzer Lawrence on his property in Yonkers founded as a college for women and named after his wife. According to the target group of the senior daughters , the educational goal was not preparation for a job, but the development of personality through general education, primarily in the aesthetic area. The small study groups, based on the Oxford / Cambridge model, which have been retained to this day, promote the educational goal. Access is still elitist today, but above all it is expensive. With $ 58,000 a year in tuition fees, Sarah Lawrence is the most expensive college in the US and currently the world.
With the introduction of co-education in 1968, the gender separation was formally eliminated. Prior to that there had been discussions about a possible merger with Princeton University, but the college's administration decided to remain independent.
The college offers many international exchange programs for its students, including in Oxford, London, Paris, Florence and as the only American college an exchange program in Cuba.
Political activism plays a central role for the students. In the past, students and lecturers were heavily involved in protest movements against the Vietnam War , Apartheid and the Iraq War . The college is actively involved in combating sexual harassment .
