Dorothy DeLay

Dorothy DeLay (born March 31, 1917 in Medicine Lodge , † March 24, 2002 in New York ) was an American violin teacher.

Live and act

Dorothy DeLay received her basic training at the Oberlin Conservatory and her artistic diploma at the Juilliard Graduate School . Her most influential teacher was Ivan Galamian , whose later assistant and successor she became. Dorothy DeLay received several honorary doctorates throughout her life. She taught from 1946 at Sarah Lawrence College , from 1948 at the Juilliard School of Music, and from 1974 at the College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati . She was an international guest lecturer for master courses and performed as a soloist and as a chamber musician in the ensemble.

The former DeLays students who later became famous include u. a. Itzhak Perlman , Midori Gotō , Jenny Bae , Kolja Blacher , Sarah Chang , Cho-Liang Lin , Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg , Nigel Kennedy , Mark Kaplan , Shlomo Mintz , Gil Shaham , Helge Slaatto , William Fitzpatrick and Wolfram Lohschütz .

In 1994 her US President Bill Clinton awarded the National Medal of Arts in the White House, and in 1997 she received the highest award from Yale University . For her services to Japanese musical culture, she honored Tennō (Emperor) Akihito with the Order of the Sacred Treasure .
