Medicine Lodge is the largest city in Barber County in the US state of Kansas . It is the county seat and is located on the Medicine Lodge River . In 2000 the city had 2,193 inhabitants and an area of 3.1 km².
The city is located at the intersection of US Highway 160 and US Highway 281 .
history
The city is located in an area that was considered holy land by the Kiowa . Because of the quarrels with the Indians, the US government built a fort in 1874.
The Medicine Lodge Treaty was signed in October 1867 near what is now the urban area . Every three years, the city celebrates a three-day festival in memory of this treaty (last time in 2006).
