Linda Louise McCartney , b. Eastman (born September 24, 1941 in New York , NY , † April 17, 1998 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American photographer and musician . She was the first wife of Beatle Paul McCartney .

Life

Linda Eastman grew up in a wealthy New York family. Her father, Lee Eastman, ran a law firm with his brother. Her customers came mainly from the music scene and the visual arts. The maternal family came from Cleveland and owned several department stores there.

After high school and her mother's death, Linda Eastman moved to Arizona . There she began studying art and history, but dropped out relatively quickly. She married geologist John Melvin See Jr. and gave birth to their first daughter, Heather, on December 31, 1962. The divorce took place in 1965. A friend piqued Eastman's interest in photography.

In late 1965, Eastman moved back to New York. She took a job as a receptionist for the Town and Country newspaper . As the magazine once featured the Rolling Stones on its cover, the band's management invited the newspaper to a press reception on the occasion of the launch of the new album . Because Eastman as a receptionist & a. had the task of opening all incoming letters without a named recipient, she got hold of the invitation and the press pass. She pocketed both and took the appointment. Since no hotel wanted to accommodate the Rolling Stones for this event, the band had rented a ship. However, that turned out to be too small to accommodate the amount of reporters and photographers. That's why those in charge decided that the photographers had to stay on land. Eastman managed to get on the boat through her tenacity and the intercession of Mick Jagger . That would be her breakthrough as a photographer, her pictures, including portraits of Aretha Franklin , Grace Slick , Jimi Hendrix , Bob Dylan , Janis Joplin , Eric Clapton , Simon & Garfunkel , The Who , The Doors , The Animals , John Lennon and Neil Young , were soon very popular. Eastman gave up her job as a receptionist and became a freelance photographer.

Four days later, on May 19, 1967, at a press conference for the Sgt. Pepper album , the two met for the second time. McCartney and Eastman were married on March 12, 1969 in London. There were three children from the marriage: Mary (* 1969), Stella (* 1971) and James (* 1977). Heather - the first of Linda's marriage - was written by Paul McCartney adopted .

Linda and Paul McCartney became vegetarians through a key experience : According to their own reports, it was said that they were eating lamb on their farm in Scotland while a small lamb got lost in the house. "Never eat anything that has a face!" Became the McCartney slogan. Linda McCartney has published several books on cooking vegetarian dishes. She founded a company for vegetarian ready-made products and campaigned vehemently for animal welfare. In 1998, Linda McCartney founded the Linda McCartney Foods Pro Cycling Team , a professional cycling team whose athletes followed a vegetarian diet.

Linda McCartney restricted her photography and began to be more concerned with music. On January 4, 1970, she contributed the backing vocals to the Beatles song Let It Be and to Paul McCartney's first solo album McCartney (April 1970), on the following McCartney album Ram (May 1971) Linda McCartney was an equal co-interpreter and performed as co-composer for six of the album's twelve songs.

Together with Paul McCartney, she founded the band Wings in August 1971 , in which she played keyboards , sang and co-composed the first three albums.
