Red Rose Speedway is the second studio album by the Wings group . At the same time, it is Paul McCartney's fourth album after the Beatles split up . It was released on April 30, 1973 in the US and on May 4, 1973 in the UK.

Emergence

Portland Building of the University of Nottingham
Single cover Hi Hi Hi

In 1972 the band embarked on two projects: touring and recording a second album. From February 9 to 23, 1972, the Wings gave eleven concerts in British universities, some in front of only a small audience, with 400 in Newcastle and 750 in Birmingham . The first concert took place in the Portland Building at the University of Nottingham .

In early 1972, guitarist Henry McCullough joined the group, who was previously a member of The Grease Band , which Joe Cocker accompanied musically. The European tour "Wings Over Europe" followed from July 9th to August 24th, 1972, which included 25 concerts. On August 10, 1972, Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Seiwell were arrested in Sweden for possession of marijuana .

In 1972 the Wings were in various recording studios between February and November.

Before the album was released, the Wings released three singles. Two of them were not played on the BBC 's programming . The first, recorded in February and released on February 25, 1972, single Give Ireland Back to the Irish / Give Ireland Back to the Irish (Version) , which thematized the Bloody Sunday , came because of the political content on the station's index .

The third single, Hi, Hi, Hi / C Moon , recorded in November and released on December 1, 1972, was boycotted by the BBC because of allusions to sex and drugs. Since the single was advertised as a double A-side single, radio stations played the song C Moon and so the single reached the top 10 of the charts in Great Britain and the USA.

The second single Mary Had a Little Lamb / Little Woman Love , released on May 12, 1972, was perceived in contrast to the other two as lyrically harmless and also reached the top ten in Great Britain. In Germany the single was released in a different mix that put the children's choir in the background.

The recordings used for the album took place from March 6 to 15 and from September 15 to October 3, 1972 in five different studios in London . On January 25 and 26, 1973 the song My Love was completed, the arrangement is by Richard Hewson. On March 6th, the recordings with the producer Glyn Johns began in the Olympic Studios, because the work with McCartney was disharmonious and the group behaved from the point of view of Johns undisciplined, he ended his activity on March 27, 1972, so that Paul McCartney sole The album was produced.

Originally the album was supposed to be released as a double LP with the following 17 songs, on December 13th 1972 an acetate press was made:

  5. The Mess I'm In (live) (released March 1973 as My Love single b-side under the title The Mess )

On January 30, 1973, another acetate pressing with a modified track list was pressed for a planned double album, which was only released in this form in December 2018.

The record company did not agree with the idea of releasing a double album, so the release date was postponed by four and a half months. Nine tracks from the planned double album were discarded; Also excluded were the recorded songs: Thank You Darling (released in 2018), 1882 (Studio Version, released in 2018), The Mess (Studio Version, released in 2018) and Bridge on the River Suite (released in October 1974 as a single B-side from Walking in the Park with Eloise under the pseudonym Country Hams ). Instead, the medley: Hold Me Tight / Lazy Dynamite / Hands of Love / Power Cut was added to the album . The song Get on the Right Thing and Little Lamb Dragonfly came from the recordings for the album Ram , the latter being revised again during the recordings for Red Rose Speedway . The arrangement of Little Lamb Dragonfly is by George Martin .

Two songs recorded during this period were planned to be used for the revised double album of January 30, 1973. Best Friend was recorded at a concert in Antwerp ( Belgium ) on August 22, 1972 and released in 2018. The song was part of the set list of European tour "Wings Over Europe", as well as Seaside Woman , a composition by Linda McCartney , who in November 1972 in the AIR Studios was recorded in London. The song was released in the US in May 1977 (UK August 1979) under the pseudonym Suzy and the Red Stripes. In October 1972, also in the AIR Studios, with George Martin the song as a producer, Live and Let Die added that the theme song for the James Bond film Live and Let Die was. The single Live and Let Die / I Lie Around was   released on June 1, 1973 and became a commercial success.

The album was mixed in January 1973, the song One More Kiss was mixed in December 1972. On April 30, 1973 the album Red Rose Speedway was released , which, in contrast to the previous album , now named Paul McCartney & Wings as the interpreter. The record company hoped for better sales numbers by naming McCartney. The previous album Wild Life did not know many potential buyers that it was an album by Paul McCartney. Red Rose Speedway became the second number-one album for Paul McCartney in the United States.

After the release of the album Red Rose Speedway , two tours followed in Great Britain; the first from May 11 to 27, 1973 with 15 concerts, the second from July 4 to 10, 1973 with four concerts.

Cover design

The album, which was released in a pop-up cover , contained a twelve-page booklet of photographs by Linda McCartney taken during the 1972 tour. The message “We love you” to Stevie Wonder was embossed in Braille on the back of the album . The front of the cover only shows the face of Paul McCartney, the other music group members of the Wings were also not shown on the back cover.

Gordon House was responsible for the cover design.
