Emergence

Philharmonic Dining Rooms
Paul McCartney, live in October 2018

Since his studio album New from 2013 Paul McCartney appeared on the soundtrack album Ethel & Ernest, the McCartney composition In the Blink of an Eye   in October 2016. With the Hollywood Vampires he took his 1969 composition Come and Get It new on. It was released in September 2015.

Another new recording of the Christmas carol Wonderful Christmastime with The Roots & Jimmy Fallon followed in October 2017 .

After 2013 McCartney still worked musically with Charlotte Gainsbourg , Ringo Starr and the Foo Fighters . The collaboration with Kanye West was commercially successful . At the turn of the year 2014/2015 he released the collective composition Only One as a download single with Paul McCartney (under the artist name "Kanye West featuring Paul McCartney") . On January 24, 2015, the song FourFiveSeconds was followed by another single with Rihanna and Kanye West under the title "Rihanna and Kanye West and Paul McCartney", which the trio performed on February 8, 2015 at the 2015 Grammy Awards . The single became an international top ten hit. The third collaboration with Kanye West and Paul McCartney was released on March 2, 2015 under the title All Day as a download single. "Kanye West featuring Theophilus London , Allan Kingdom & Paul McCartney" were given as the interpreters. At All Day , parts of the unreleased McCartney song When the Wind is Blowing were used at the end of the title . Between the two albums, Paul McCartney was on tour between May 4, 2013 and October 22, 2015 (Out There Tour) and between April 13, 2016 and December 16, 2017 (One on One) .

After Paul McCartney split from the recording company EMI in 2007 and switched to Hear Music / Universal Music Group , Capitol Records announced in August 2016 that Paul McCartney would return to his previous label and that he was working on a new studio album.

According to album producer Greg Kurstin, he and McCartney probably first worked together in February 2015, with a song recorded for the soundtrack of the film High in the Clouds and not yet for the album. The following year, 2016, the two began working on the album, with the recordings taking place in stages during the tour breaks of mostly two weeks each in Great Britain and the USA. The daily recording time was between 12 noon and 6 pm. The songs were often only fragmentary at the beginning of the recording and were then worked out in the studio with Paul McCartney's backing band. In the actual studio recordings, however, the backing band was not used for all the songs, so McCartney and Kurstin played titles such as Confidante mostly on their own. It was important to McCartney to experiment musically while recording. According to Paul McCartney, the compilation of the 50th anniversary edition of the Beatles album Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 2017 had an impact on the musical work on his new album. For the songs Station I and Station II , the same tape recorder was used for so-called tape loops that was used for the Beatles album Revolver . While the album was being made, lead producer Greg Kurstin was unavailable, so McCartney continued to work with Ryan Tedder and Zach Skelton. Ray Tedder produced and composed the songs Fuh You and Nothing for Free with Paul McCartney. Greg Kurstin took over further production work. The last songs were recorded at Abbey Road Studios in late 2017 , where many overdubs were recorded. Up until February 2018, further overdubs were recorded and then the mixes were made. According to producer Kurstin, up to 25 songs were recorded. Ryan Tedder produced three other songs with McCartney.

The album was promoted through several campaigns, for example Paul McCartney took part in the Carpool Karaoke music series with James Corden in Liverpool on June 9, 2018 , where there was also a live performance in the 'Philharmonic Dining Rooms' pub . It was published on June 17th on YouTube . A concert was held on July 19 at Abbey Road Studios , on July 26 at the Cavern Club and on September 7 in New York at Grand Central Station . At the concerts he presented songs from the new album live. On September 17, 2018, the new Paul McCartney tour began under the name Freshen Up Tour . On January 1, 2019, the song Get Enough was released for download and streaming services . It was produced and co-composed by Ray Tedder and comes from the Egypt Station recording sessions , but was not used for the album.

Paul McCartney commented on the album title as follows:

“I liked the words 'Egypt Station'. It reminded me of the 'album' albums we used to make […] 'Egypt Station' starts off at the station on the first song and then each song is like a different station. "

“I liked the words 'Egypt Station'. They reminded me of the 'Album' albums we made […] 'Egypt Station' starts at the first station with the first song. And then every song is like another station. "

The original album Egypt Station contains 16 songs, in the USA a deluxe version with two other tracks was released by the retail chain Target , in Great Britain this was released by HMV . In Germany, the deluxe version is available exclusively from Saturn and Media Markt .

The album was also pressed as a double vinyl album on black vinyl, red vinyl, green vinyl, and orange and blue (one record each) vinyl.

Egypt Station was also released as a music cassette .

On May 17, 2019, the album was released under the title Explorer's Edition as a double CD and triple vinyl album with a new cover design. The album was also released as a triple vinyl album on magenta (2 LP: Egypt Station ) and pink vinyl (Egypt Station II) . The second CD and the third LP are titled Egypt Station II on the label , which contains ten songs, six studio and four live recordings. The live recordings were recorded by Giles Martin , Steve Orchard, Paul Boothroys and John Harris and produced by Giles Martin. The studio recordings include the two bonus songs from the Deluxe Edition as well as the download single Get Enough and the full version of Who Cares, as well as the two previously unreleased songs Frank Sinatra's Party and Sixty Second Street .

A week earlier, on May 10, 2019 , a case limited to 3000 copies was released under the name Egypt Station Traveller's Edition Box Set . The contents of the blue case consists of the double vinyl album, a CD, a music cassette and the single album Egypt Station II as a vinyl album and CD, which does not contain the songs Get Enough , Get Started and Nothing for Free , these are but available as a download. The single album has its own cover design. The other contents of the case are a puzzle , playing cards, stickers , lithographs and copies of handwritten texts as well as other enclosures.

The download single Home Tonight / In A Hurry was released on November 22, 2019 , both songs are from the recording sessions with Greg Kurstin but were not used for the album Egypt Station . On November 29, 2019, the single was released as a 7 "vinyl picture disc on Record Store Day .

The album Egypt Station was commercially successful in Germany (13th top ten album), Great Britain (28th top ten album) and in the USA (20th top ten album). After Tug of War, it is Paul McCartney's second album, which reached first place in the German charts and the eighth number one album in the USA.

Cover design

The cover is based on the pictures Egypt Station and Egypt Station II painted by Paul McCartney . The cover concept comes from Gary Card and Ferry Gouw, other concept ideas from Rebecca and Mike (the last names are not listed on the CD cover). The photographs of the CD inlay are by Sam Rock and MJ Kim. The CD cardboard cover can be opened four times to the side (“Concertina Sleeve”) and is wrapped in a thin red elastic band (deluxe version: green band). On the inside of the CD cover are the lyrics of the songs on the album. The front cover of the deluxe double vinyl album (180 g colored vinyl) essentially has the back cover of the CD. The album cover can be opened twice on the side and contains an insert sheet in LP size that can be opened twice on which the lyrics are printed as well as a download code for the MP3 version of the album. The standard double vinyl album (140 g black vinyl) has a simple sleeve and the same front cover as the CD, the back cover is not identical to the back cover of the deluxe double LP or the CD ("Concertina Sleeve") . The lyrics of the songs are printed on the inner sleeves, and the album comes with a download code.

The triple vinyl album of the Explorer's Edition (180 g black vinyl) has a simple cover and includes a download code. The paperback of the double CD of the Explorer's Edition can be opened. The cover design has been modified because the background colors are reddish.
