Abraham Abe Laboriel Jr. (born March 23, 1971 ) is an American studio and touring drummer , son of the American studio bassist Abe Laboriel and brother of the composer and producer Mateo Laboriel.

Laboriel has played in Paul McCartney's tour band since 2001 and has also played with Mylène Farmer , Sting , Eric Clapton , Seal , Steve Vai , Duran Duran , Natalie Cole , Randy Crawford and Melissa Etheridge . He is known for his extremely powerful playing, but also masters the soft tones.

Early years

As the son of one of the most famous jazz bassists, Abraham junior began playing drums at the age of four and his career goal was set at the age of 10. His mother is a classically trained singer.

Through his father, he had contact with the best drummers on the Los Angeles studio scene at a very early age and at the age of ten he was supported by Jeff Porcaro (from Toto ), Chester Thompson (drumming for Eric Clapton ), Bill Maxwell and Alex Acuña (drummer at Weather Report and for Elvis Presley ).

He attended the Dick Grove School of Music early in high school , where he was tutored by Peter Donald. He then took classes at the Alexander Hamilton High School (Academy of Music) in Los Angeles until he graduated. There he gained his first experience in computer programming, became a member of a marching band and founded a bebop trio with Vernell Brown and Mike Elizondo. In 1989 he was recognized by the National Foundation For The Advancement Of The Arts and Down Beat Magazine and enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated in 1993 after four and a half years in Music Synthesis . In addition to drums, he has also mastered the piano, keyboards and guitar.

Career

Abe Laboriel's first breakthrough as a drummer was touring as a drummer for guitarist Steve Vai . He then toured with Seal , and while working in the studio with this in Los Angeles , he made the acquaintance of several producers, which led to further engagements. In the 1990s, Laboriel appeared on the Nickelodeon television series Roundhouse .

Then he went on tour with kd lang and was seen there by Sting, who asked him to join his tour band as a drummer. The connection to kd lang also led Laboriel to Paul McCartney in 2001, with whom, in addition to his work on stage and in the studio, he also appeared in 2001 at the concert for New York City and during the half-time break of the Super Bowl , and Sir Paul has since then accompanied on every tour.

Laboriel also plays in his bands The Raging Honkies and Chocolate Genius, Inc.

As a touring musician, he also sings background. In 2006 he played as the drummer in Mylène Farmer's Paris stage show Avant que l'ombre… à Bercy (Before the Shadow… in Bercy) and sang the moving duet Les Mots (The Words) with her . He also played with Sting at the Montreux Jazz Festival that year .

He toured Japan with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood in 2008 and also accompanied them on their 2009 American tour.

Laboriel also played in the studio and on tours with Jonatha Brooke , Shakira , BB King , Jewel , Steven Curtis Chapman , Johnny Hallyday , Jenifer , Les Paul , Ashlee Simpson , LeAnn Rimes , Letters to Cleo , Vanessa Carlton , Kelly Clarkson , Lady Gaga , Steve Lukather and many others.
