Joseph Lee “Joe” Henry (born December 2, 1960 in Charlotte ) is an American songwriter, guitarist and producer.

His music is based on country and folk .
He produced a. a. Bonnie Raitt , Ani DiFranco , Aimee Mann , Elvis Costello and Loudon Wainwright . He received a Grammy for three albums he produced : Don't Give Up by Solomon Burke ( 2003 , best contemporary blues album), A Stranger Here by Ramblin 'Jack Elliott ( 2010 , best traditional blues album) and Genuine Negro Jig by Carolina Chocolate Drops ( 2011 , best traditional folk album).
His wife Melanie is Madonna's sister . Her title Don't Tell Me on the 2000 album Music is a revision of Henry's Song Stop . His son Levon is also a musician and has accompanied him in the studio and at concerts.
In 2013, Henry and his brother David Henry published the book Furious Cool about the actor and comedian Richard Pryor .
