Loudon Wainwright III (born September 5, 1946 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina ) is an American musician and actor .

biography

Wainwright grew up in Bedford , New York . His father, Loudon Wainwright Jr. , was a noted journalist for Life magazine and his mother was a yoga teacher. His sister Sloan Wainwright is also a singer. Wainwright's career began in the New York folk scene in the late 1960s . In 1970 his debut album was released. He had his first success in 1972 with the hit Dead Skunk (In the Middle of the Road). He subsequently released numerous other albums, two of which were nominated for a Grammy .

In addition to his musical activities, Wainwright also works as an actor. He was in his role as "singing surgeon" in the television series in 1975 to a wider public M * A * S * H known. Since then he has appeared in numerous films and television series, including Aviator (with Leonardo DiCaprio ) and 28 Tage (with Sandra Bullock ).

His marriage to Canadian singer and songwriter Kate McGarrigle resulted in a son, Rufus Wainwright , and a daughter, Martha Wainwright , who are also musicians. Rufus is dedicated to one of Wainwright's better-known songs, an ode to breast milk nutrition (Rufus Is a Tit Man), and Martha is also celebrated with a birthday serenade (Five Years Old). The connection with the singer Suzzy Roche ( The Roches ) gave birth to the daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche , who is also a musician.

He was last seen in Germany in 2003 in Duisburg (see photo) at the RuhrTriennale Festival together with the songwriter Van Dyke Parks - at the invitation of the guitarist Bill Frisell , who performed the Century of Song concert series there as musical director until 2005.

Together with Joe Henry , Wainwright composed the soundtrack for The First Time (2007). On his album 10 Songs for the New Depression from the beginning of 2010, the song The Krugman Blues is a homage to the New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize economist Paul Krugman .
