action

New York journalist Gwen Cummings is a popular party girl. For her and her friend Jasper, life is one big party with endless alcohol and cocaine orgies.

Cummings is late for her sister's wedding because of a night of partying. There she gets drunk, completely misbehaves and drives off in the wedding limousine to get a cake. Gwen rams a house with a garden fence and is arrested. The consequence is a conviction to a prison sentence, which is converted into a 28-day coercion treatment in the center under the name "Serenity Glen". Here she is confronted with a number of rules, such as singing together with the patients and an absolute ban on cell phones. After initial problems, she befriends several other patients. Gwen's roommate, Andrea, a 17-year-old girl addicted to heroin, got on drugs the day before she was released and died of an overdose.

Gwen is initially visited regularly by her friend Jasper and secretly supplied with alcohol and pills, but later she refuses further deliveries. She falls in love with the sensitive sex and drug addict baseball star Eddie. Although Gwen breaks various rules several times (no alcohol, no other drugs, no medication) and is therefore almost thrown out, she can successfully complete the withdrawal. When saying goodbye, Eddie gives her the advice to part with Jasper because he is not good for her. Gwen has now spoken out and made up with her sister. She gains different views on life than before therapy and breaks up with Jasper after he tried to persuade her to go to parties and drinking bouts.

Reviews

"A star film tailored entirely to Sandra Bullock, uninspired in terms of directing, which never finds the balance between comedy and problem film."

James Berardinelli criticized on ReelViews that the film would offer a glossed over image of alcoholism from the “Hollywood point of view”. He wrote that Sandra Bullock would look too good for the character of an alcoholic woman, her portrayal would be "flat" and "uncharismatic".

Roger Ebert criticized Steve Buscemi's portrayal in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 14, 2000. He wrote that Sandra Bullock would show a "superficial vulnerability" in the film.

background

In preparation for her role, Sandra Bullock spent some time in a rehabilitation clinic. Before each scene in which she was supposed to tremble uncontrollably in the role, she drank a triple espresso beforehand . Most of the artistic work in the background at the group sessions was done by actual rehab patients.

In the German dubbed version, Sandra Bullock is not dubbed by her usual dubbing voice Bettina Weiß , but by Nana Spier .

Production costs were estimated at $ 43 million. The film grossed around $ 62 million in cinemas around the world, including $ 37 million in the United States.
