Driving Rain ( English driving rain ) is the 13th solo album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums, the Fireman albums, the classic albums, the live albums and compilation albums, it is Paul McCartney's 34th album after the Beatles split up . It was released in the UK and USA on November 12, 2001 .

Emergence

Since his last studio album Run Devil Run , Paul McCartney and his then partner Heather Mills released the single Vo! Ce in December 1999 , followed in June 2000 by the release of the Buddy Holly song Maybe Baby , which appeared on the soundtrack album of the same name. In April 2001 the tribute album Brand New Boots and Panties was published in honor of Ian Dury , for which Paul McCartney contributed the song I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra , the song was also released as a promotional CD in Great Britain. Paul McCartney contributed That's All Right to the compilation album Good Rockin 'Tonight - The Legacy of Sun Records , the album was released in October 2001. In December 2001, Lindsay Pagano's duet So Bad with Paul McCartney was on the album Love & Faith & Inspiration released. The original of this new recording comes from the album Pipes of Peace .

The recordings for the album Driving Rain took place in the Henson Studios in Los Angeles and began on February 16, 2001. McCartney formed a new backing band for this project. Some of the invited musicians like Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel junior were to accompany him on further albums and tours later. During the elaboration, McCartney always paid attention to a spontaneous and fresh-looking overall mood, which he tried to achieve by first playing the respective song to the musicians with an acoustic guitar , having them rehearse it briefly and then record it.

For the first time, David Kahne was the producer, who was later hired to record the studio album Memory Almost Full . The songs on the album, except Your Loving Flame , were recorded between February 16 and March 2, 2001. The songs Your Loving Flame and Vanilla Sky were recorded in June 2001. Musically, the album seems rougher than Flaming Pie , which is also due to the fact that relatively little time was spent on the recordings.

Vanilla Sky is the theme song of the feature film of the same name . It was released on the Music from Vanilla Sky soundtrack album and as a promotional CD in December 2001 and was not used for the Driving Rain album . The song Vanilla Sky received an Oscar nomination and Paul McCartney performed the piece on March 24, 2002 at the Academy Awards. In 2003 Vanilla Sky also received a Grammy nomination in the Soundtrack category.

The last title Freedom came about when Paul McCartney was on a plane in New York on September 11, 2001 while the terrorist attacks occurred. Under the influence of these events he composed Freedom and played it at a concert for New York City . At relatively short notice he stopped the CD production of Driving Rain so that Freedom could be added to the album in the live version of this concert. Since the CD covers had already been made by then, the song Freedom was not mentioned on the track list. The original promotional CDs did not include the song Freedom .

The album Driving Rain did not sell well, only reaching number 46 on the UK charts. No new studio album by Paul McCartney up to and including Egypt Station placed lower in the UK. It remains speculative whether the low sales were due to the record company failing to market it, the music or the cover. In the USA, the album was temporarily given a cardboard sleeve with a newly designed cover in 2002. Due to the success of the Drivin 'USA tour, the album Driving Rain was awarded gold in April 2002 for 500,000 copies sold .

Paul McCartney appeared on the German entertainment show Wetten, dass ..? On December 15, 2001 . to introduce his new single Freedom .

The album was also released as a vinyl double album in Europe.

Cover design

The cover was designed by Norman Hathaway, Micha Weidmann and Donat Raetzo. The black and white cover photos are from Paul McCartney, which he photographed with a Casio Wrist Camera Watch (digital camera in a wristwatch). The photos are mostly indistinct and pixelated . The CD comes with a 22-page illustrated booklet that contains information on the album, the songs and the lyrics.
