Flowers in the Dirt Tripping the Live Fantastic
(1990)

Flowers in the Dirt ( English Flowers in the Dirt ) is the ninth solo album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums and compilation albums , it is Paul McCartney's 19th album after the Beatles split up . It was released on June 5, 1989 in the UK and June 6, 1989 in the US . It was the last album so far with which McCartney reached the top of the British charts.

Emergence

After his last solo album Press to Play was a commercial failure in late 1986, McCartney devoted himself to various music projects. In December 1986 he recorded the instrumental song Squid , which only appeared in July 1997 on the B-side of the single The World Tonight .

In February / March 1987 Paul McCartney recorded several songs with Phil Ramone as producer; but there was no album release. However, two songs from these recording sessions were released in 1987, Once Upon a Long Ago was chosen for the compilation album All the Best! and used as the single A-side, the second song Back on My Feet became the B-side. Other recorded songs were: PS Love Me Do (Release: Flowers in the Dirt - Special Edition ), Love Come Tumbling Down (B-side of Beautiful Night , December 1997), This One (new recording during the sessions for Flowers in the Dirt ) , Atlantic Ocean (B-side of Young Boy , April 1997), Love Mix (B-side of Beautiful Night , December 1997) and the songs previously only published on Bootlegs : Return to Pepperland , Big Day and Christian Bob .

During these recordings Paul McCartney recorded with Duane Eddy and other studio musicians in February 1987 the song Rockestra Theme from the album Back to the Egg . The producer of this new recording is Eddy Pumer. Rockestra Theme was released on the album Duane Eddy , as well as 7 "vinyl and 12" vinyl single, in a lengthy mix, in Great Britain in 1987.

A spontaneous session on July 20 and 21, 1987 resulted in the album Снова в СССР with cover versions of 16 rock 'n' roll pieces, which was released exclusively in the USSR in October 1988 and released worldwide in September and October 1991 .

This was followed in October 1987 with recordings of two Linda McCartney songs, Endless Days and Poison Ivy , which were released on the Linda McCartney album Wide Prairie in 1998, and the Paul McCartney song Tropic Island Hum in December 1987 recorded, but it was only released as a single in September 2004.

For the first time since the album Back to the Egg , Paul McCartney recorded an album with a permanent backing band, so most of the songs featured Linda McCartney, Hamish Stuart , Paul "Wix" Wickens, Chris Whitten and Robbie McIntosh (from September 1988). The band stayed together, apart from drummer Chris Whitten, until the end of 1993. With Paul "Wix" Wickens Paul McCartney works musically to this day (as of March 2017).

The first recordings for the album Flowers in the Dirt took place between December 1987 and January 1988 with the producers Trevor Horn and Steve Lipson, during these sessions the songs Rough Ride , Figure of Eight , How Many People and Où est le Soleil? recorded.

At the suggestion of his manager Richard Ogden, McCartney worked with Elvis Costello from September 1987 . Both already composed the title Back on My Feet , which was completed in March 1987 and appeared in November 1987 as the B-side of McCartney's single Once Upon a Long Ago . A very productive phase followed, in which several songs were created that later appeared not only on the McCartney album Flowers in the Dirt . Other recordings were published elsewhere: Veronica and Pads, Paws and Claws appeared on Costello's Spike album , So like Candy and Playboy to a Man appeared on Elvis Costello's Mighty like a Rose album , while Paul McCartney shared the jointly written songs Mistress and Maid and The Lovers That Never Were for his 1993 album Off the Ground . The two demo recordings Twenty-Five Fingers and Tommy's Coming Home , sung and recorded by McCartney and Costello and produced by McCartney in his Hog Hill Studio, were released on bootlegs ; the recordings are from September 3 and October 23, 1987. Nine of the demos were officially released on March 24, 2017 as a bonus to the CD / LP re-release.

On January 26th, February 1st, 2nd and 26th as well as on March 3rd, 1988 Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney produced with the studio band consisting of Chris Whitten (drums), Hamish Stewart (guitar, vocals) and Kevin Armstrong (guitar , Gesang) several songs, nine of which were also released as part of the Deluxe Edition on March 24, 2017.

In the course of this collaboration with Costello, which specifically concerned a new McCartney album, McCartney had doubts. Costello increasingly encouraged him to musically approach the style of the Beatles or " to orientate himself on the naked Mersey beat of the early years". When Costello returned to his own career after the recordings, McCartney had the collaborative songs by producers Mitchell Froom and Neil Dorfsman revised in September to November 1988.

Between April and July 1988 Paul McCartney produced the songs Put It There , Distraction , This One , Flying to My Home , The First Stone , Good Sign and the songs New Moon over Jamaica used in later years (released after a musical revision in October 1988 on the Johnny Cash album Water From the Wells of Home ), Same Love (B-side of the single Beautiful Night , December 1997), Don't Break the Promises (B-side of the single The World Tonight , May 1997) . Furthermore, two songs by Linda McCartney were recorded, The White Coated Man and Cow , which were only officially released in October 1998 on the Linda McCartney album Wide Prairie .

In the beginning of 1989 Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum produced the song Motor of Love and were still working on the revised single version of Figure of Eight .

The mixing of the album, which in addition to four co-productions with Costello also contained eight pieces written by McCartney alone, was completed on January 30, 1989.

As a pre-coupling of the album, the single My Brave Face was released on May 8, 1989 . Flowers in the Dirt was released on June 5, 1989. The album title goes back to a text passage in the song That Day Is Done ("She sprinkles the flowers with dirt ..."), whereby critics also pointed to the association of the picture with the punk movement.

Despite intensive promotional work by Paul McCartney, Flowers in the Dirt was the third studio album in a row that did not reach the top 20 on the US Billboard 200 , but it became the seventh and so far last number one album for Paul McCartney in Great Britain .

To promote the album in Germany, Paul McCartney appeared on the German entertainment show Mensch Meier on May 18, 1989 and performed the songs Put It There and Figure of Eight with full playback , both playback recordings coming from the music video Put It There .

In May 1989, the benefit single Ferry 'Cross the Mersey was released for the benefit of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster , performers were Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden , Holly Johnson and The Christians , producers of the song composed by Gerry Marsden were Stock Aitken Waterman .

The song was number 1 on the UK charts for three weeks .

criticism

The music magazine Rolling Stone praised the songs that were created in collaboration with Costello, with My Brave Face showing "two masterful songwriters at work who play out their opposing strengths and are in top form".

The Allmusic database found that the album had “more heart, ambition and courage” than its predecessor; With Flowers in the Dirt, McCartney wanted to create an album with “more demanding texts, themes, sounds and productions”. Other critics also found Flowers in the Dirt to be a good comeback for McCartney, with the Chicago Tribune heading "Paul Is Back - Well, Almost" and writing that the album was a welcome, if not entirely fantastic, return of the "most fabulous of the Fab Four" .
