Wingspan: Hits and History is the third compilation album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums, the Fireman albums, the classic albums, the live albums and compilation albums, it is Paul McCartney's 33rd album after the Beatles split up . It was released on May 7, 2001 in the UK and May 8, 2001 in the US.
Emergence
The third compilation album by Paul McCartney was titled Wingspan , but Paul McCartney was listed as the interpreter. The selection of songs spanned the period from 1970 beginning with the McCartney album through 1984's Give My Regards to Broad Street album, although the Wings Back to the Egg's last album was released in 1979. Of the total of 40 songs, the double album includes five tracks by Paul and Linda McCartney , twelve tracks by Paul McCartney and 22 tracks by the Wings. The demo version of the medley Bip Bop / Hey Diddle was previously unreleased. The double album is more like a compilation album by Paul McCartney, as it is cross-career.
The US version of the album contains the live version of the wings, Coming Up (Live at Glasgow) instead of the studio version of the song Coming Up by Paul McCartney .
The European CD version of Wingspan: Hits and History contains sixteen top ten hits, two of three number one hits from Great Britain. The top ten hits from Great Britain Mary Had a Little Lamb , Wonderful Christmastime , We All stand Together , Say Say Say and Once upon a Long Ago as well as the number one hit Ebony and Ivory are not included on the album; only the title Mary Had a Little Lamb comes from the Wings.
The US CD version of Wingspan: Hits and History contains 17 top ten hits, seven of nine number one hits from the USA. The top ten hit from the USA Spies Like Us as well as the number one hits Ebony and Ivory and Say Say Say are not included on the album, none of the three songs are from the Wings.
The duet with Michael Jackson The Girl Is Mine , also a top ten hit in Great Britain and the USA, is a composition by Michael Jackson and was released on another recording company, so this song is not on Wingspan: Hits and History for legal reasons is included.
The first CD, entitled Hits , contains only single A-sides, while the second CD, entitled History, contains A- and B-sides of singles as well as songs from albums. The songs on the album were remastered by Peter Mew and Geoff Emerick . Wingspan: Hits and History was also released as a quadruple vinyl album in Europe.
The album was commercially successful in the UK (21st Top Ten album) and in the US (14th Top Ten album).
