Snowa v SSSR ( Russian : Снова в СССР , English : Back in the USSR, also known as The Russian Album ) is an originally only in the October 31, 1988 the Soviet Union published music album of the British musician Paul McCartney , consisting exclusively of rock ' n'-roll classics. At the same time, including the Wings albums, live albums and compilation albums, it is Paul McCartney's 22nd album after the Beatles split up . It was released on September 30, 1991 in the UK and October 29, 1991 in the US.

Emergence

After his last solo album Press to Play became a commercial failure, McCartney devoted himself to various music projects, so McCartney decided to return to his musical roots and record his favorite songs from the 1950s. A spontaneous session on July 20 and 21, 1987 resulted in the album Snowa w SSSR with cover versions of 15 rock 'n' roll pieces and an original composition. The songs were mixed on July 22nd. Paul McCartney had a few LPs pressed for his family and friends, which he gave away at Christmas in 1987. Four of these songs, Midnight Special , Don't Get Around Much Anymore , Lawdy Miss Clawdy, and Kansas City , were used as B-side titles for two Once Upon a Long Ago maxisingles released in November 1987.

In 1988 Paul McCartney and his then manager Richard Ogden decided to release the album exclusively in the Soviet Union . Снова в СССР was supposed to be a present to McCartney's Russian fans, who in 1988 found it difficult to acquire his other publications.

The album title Снова в СССР is the translation of the Beatles song Back in the USSR , written by McCartney and released on the so-called White Album in 1968 . Both the Cyrillic and Latin spelling of the album title are often found. The title corresponds to the German transcription Snowa w SSSR.

Although 16 songs resulted from the recording sessions, the first 50,000 copies produced and released on October 31, 1988 contained only 11 songs.

When a new pressing with 350,000 copies of the album appeared in the Soviet Union in December 1988, the songs I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday and Summertime were added as well as a back cover text by Roy Carr. The original cover text is from Andre Gavrilov . The second edition of the album now had the following order of songs:

On January 26, 1989, Paul McCartney gave an interview for the BBC Russian Service to promote his album in the Soviet Union. In September / October 1991, the album was released worldwide on CD, and I'm in Love Again, which was released in July 1989 as the B-side of McCartney's single This One , was added, and the album now comprised 14 tracks. Two other songs from this recording session were released elsewhere: I Wanna Cry as another B-side of This One and It's Now or Never on The Last Temptation of Elvis CD released by the New Musical Express in February 1991 .

The CD release was not commercially successful. One of the possible reasons is that potential buyers acquired vinyl long-playing records or bootlegs imported from the Soviet Union .

Cover design

The album cover was designed by McCartney's wife Linda and shows Paul with a red star . The photo was taken while recording the album Ram . The CD comes with a 16-page illustrated booklet containing information about the album and the songs.
