Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio is the first classical album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums, the live albums and compilation albums, it is Paul McCartney's 23rd album after the Beatles split up . It was released on October 7, 1991 in the UK and October 22, 1991 in the US.

The compilation album Selections from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio is not an independent new album by Paul McCartney and mainly contains partially shortened songs from the album Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio . It was released in the UK a year later on October 5, 1992. It did not appear in the United States.

Emergence

In the introduction to the CD booklet, Paul McCartney describes how the Liverpool Oratorio came about :

“After all these years of my career, I find it very exciting that the Royal Liverpool Orchestra asked me to co-write something with Carl Davis for their memorial service. This is the best opportunity for me to expand my previous flirtations with orchestra and choir into a real work. "

- Paul McCartney

Work on the oratorio began in 1988 and should be finished in 1991 for the 150th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra . Paul McCartney's composition work took place with Carl Davis , who brought the necessary experience to the project through his classical musical training and commissioned work for the composition of film scores and soundtracks. The story of the oratorio is based in part on Paul McCartney's youth in Liverpool, starting in 1942.

The rehearsals before the actual performance took place on three days from March 25 to 27, 1991. The preparatory work was documented by the BBC in the film Ghost of the Past . The film's directors are Geoff Wonfor and Andy Matthews.

The premiere of Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio took place on 28 June 1991 in Liverpool Cathedral instead. The premiere and performance the following day, attended by Paul McCartney and Carl Davis, were used for the CD and film recordings. Thus, Paul McCartney's first classic work is a live album.
