Emergence

On January 25, 1991 Paul McCartney gave a concert in front of around 200 guests at Limehouse Television Studios in Wembley (Great Britain). The concert was recorded for MTV television, directed by Bruce Gowers, and broadcast in a series of unplugged concerts. During these concerts, the artists used mainly acoustic instruments.

The total recording length of Paul McCartney's appearance was nearly 100 minutes, which was cut to 48 minutes for the television broadcast, which took place on April 3, 1991 in the USA and on August 26, 1991 in the UK. In total, the following 24 songs were performed in this order:

  1. Mean Woman Blues (not included on LP / CD, the song was released on Biker Like an Icon's UK promotional CD single)

The television broadcast contained only 14 songs instead of the 17 on the CD, the titles San Francisco Bay Blues , Hi-Heel Sneakers and Ain't No Sunshine were not used.

On this album, the drummer Chris Whitten, who switched to the music group Dire Straits , was replaced by Blair Cunningham.

Test recordings for the concert, available on bootlegs , were made at Paul McCartney's studio in Sussex , where other songs were rehearsed that were not performed: Cut Across Shorty , Froggie Went-a-Courtin ' , Love Me Tender , Mother Nature's Son , Rock Island Line and Tequila .

After the concert, Paul McCartney decided to release the gig as his third live album, which then became the first unplugged album. Other artists such as Eric Clapton and Mariah Carey released other unplugged albums in the following years. The album included Paul McCartney's first composition, I Lost My Little Girl , which was first legally released.

Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) was sold as a vinyl long-playing record in a limited edition of 250,000 copies. The production took place in Spain on the Hispavox label. The production of the CD was discontinued after the release date, except in Japan .

After the album was released, Paul McCartney went on a European tour from May 8th to July 24th that included six concerts. The concerts had an acoustic and an "electrical" part and took place in smaller concert halls that could hold between 1,000 and 3,326 visitors. The songs of the acoustic part varied at the concerts.

Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) is the first album since Tug of War to make it into the top twenty on the US Billboard 200 .
