Wings Greatest is the eighth music album by the group Wings . It is Paul McCartney's eleventh album after the Beatles split up and his first compilation album . It was released on November 27, 1978 in the US and on December 1, 1978 in the UK.
Emergence
After the compilation album Shaved Fish by John Lennon was released in October 1975 and Blast from Your Past by Ringo Starr the following month , a year later, in November 1976, a compilation album by George Harrison entitled The Best of George Harrison followed . Except for Paul McCartney, no ex-Beatle renewed the record deal with EMI after the deal with Apple Records expired on January 26, 1976.
From 1979 up to and including 1984 Paul McCartney was in the USA and Canada with the recording company Columbia Records under contract. Capitol Records was able to release a compilation album by Paul McCartney in December 1978, which was titled with the name Wings Greatest .
The song Another Day is the A-side of a Paul McCartney single and Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey is from the album Ram by Paul and Linda McCartney. So both titles are not Wings songs. Furthermore, the album does not contain the number one hit from the USA Listen to What the Man Said and the USA top ten hits Helen Wheels and Maybe I'm Amazed (live) . The top ten hit from Great Britain Mary Had a Little Lamb is also not included on the album.
Wings Greatest contains nine top ten hits from Great Britain and eleven US top ten hits, five of which are US number one hits. Mull of Kintyre failed to reach the top ten in the US, but was Paul McCartney's only number one hit in the UK until the album's release year.
In Bulgaria , the album Wings Greatest was released without the song Live and Let Die . In Italy the album was also pressed on blue vinyl.
Cover design
The cover shows a small statue that was placed on a snow-capped mountain in Zermatt , Switzerland and was photographed by Angus Forbes. The design was done by Hipgnosis. The statue was used again for the cover of the upcoming studio album Back to the Egg .
