Standing Stone ( English standing stone , German menhir ) is the second classic album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums, the Fireman albums, the classic albums, the live albums and compilation albums, it is Paul McCartney's 28th album after the Beatles split up . It was released on September 29, 1997 in the UK and on September 23, 1997 in the US.

Emergence

In 1993 EMI Classics Chairman Richard Lyttleton asked Paul McCartney to write another classic work after Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio , marking the EMI Group 's 100th anniversary in 1997 . The first composition work began in 1993 and was changed in 1995 by the Cubase software, which enables compositions performed on the keyboard to be printed out on paper. The composer David Matthews transformed the printed sheet music into arrangements for an orchestra. Other musicians such as Richard Rodney Bennett, who oversaw the further orchestration, and John Harle added the musical parts in the desired form.

The test recordings for the album took place on March 3rd and 4th 1997 in Abbey Road Studios in Studio 1 and were documented by the BBC in the film The Making of Standing Stone , which was released on November 23 in the USA and on November 26. Televised in Great Britain December 1997; the director of the film is Christopher Swann. The album was recorded on three days from April 30th to May 2nd, 1997 in the same studio and then mixed in Paul McCartney's studio in Sussex from May 12th to 19th, 1997. On July 12th, work on the album was completed, whereupon the album was released in September 1997.

A double vinyl long-playing record, limited to 2500 copies, was released in Great Britain on December 1, 1997.

The first performance of Standing Stone took place on October 14, 1997 in London at the Royal Albert Hall . The premiere was filmed and used in the film Standing Stone . In the US , the first performance was on November 19, 1997 at Carnegie Hall in New York .
