Emergence

New World Tour Design by Brian Clarke
Stage design of the New World Tour of Brian Clarke

Following the release of his album Off the Ground , Paul McCartney went on tour again in February 1993. From February 18 to 23, 1993 Paul McCartney began his world tour under the name New World Tour with a European tour with four concerts, each including two concerts in Frankfurt am Main and Milan . An Australia / New Zealand tour with ten concerts followed from March 5th to 27th . From April 14 to June 15, 1993 McCartney went on a North American tour with 23 concerts. The setlist was as follows:

At the request of the record company EMI there should be a new live album by Paul McCartney for Christmas business, so Geoff Emerick and McCartney put the songs together in July 1993 in their own Hog Hill Mill Studios in Sussex and mixed them.

In contrast to the live albums Wings over America and Tripping the Live Fantastic , this live album was neither released as a triple long-playing record nor as a double CD, but only as a double album and a single CD, so that only nineteen of the 34 songs played on average were used. The order of the songs corresponds, with exceptions, to the order of the songs that were played during the concerts. Kansas City , included on the album, was only played on May 31, 1993 in Kansas City . The CD ends with three soundcheck recordings, of which Hotel in Benidorm and A Fine Day are new compositions.

After the album was completed, the world tour continued. A European tour with 28 concerts followed from September 3 to October 27, 1993, after which Paul McCartney gave five concerts in Japan from November 12 to 19, 1993 . The world tour ended with a South America tour, from November 25th to December 16th, with eight concerts.

The album Paul Is Live was not a commercial success, it is likely that one of the reasons was the time lag to the previous live album Tripping the Live Fantastic , which was released three years earlier.

Cover design and name of the album

Volkswagen with the registration number "51 IS"

The cover was designed by Electronic Retouching Obscura under the direction of Roger Huggett. The front image is by Ian Macmillan and the image on the back of the CD is by Linda McCartney . The CD is accompanied by a 16-page, illustrated booklet that can be opened into a mini poster.

The title of the album was originally intended to be From AUS to USA , as only live recordings from the USA and Australia were used. The title Paul Is Live then used is meant ambiguously, on the one hand the name of a live album is meant, on the other hand it refers to a conspiracy theory regarding Paul McCartney.

Rumors have existed since 1969 that Paul McCartney was killed in a car accident and replaced by a doppelganger. As alleged "evidence" one interpreted, among other things, some details on the cover of the LP Abbey Road , for example that McCartney is the only one of the Beatles to be seen barefoot, which is interpreted as a symbol of death in Great Britain, as people are buried there without shoes. In addition, it is extraordinary that he - as a left-handed person - holds his cigarette in his right hand. These conspiracy theories were started by a radio host. The cover of Abbey Road served as a template, which underwent some changes:

  • Instead of the four Beatles, Paul McCartney can be seen with a dog.
  • Paul McCartney is wearing shoes this time.
  • The Volkswagen license plate does not read as “28 IF”, but as “51 IS”. At the time of the album's release, McCartney was 51 years old.
  • The police car from the original cover has been removed.
