Good Rocking Tonight (also known as Good Rockin 'Tonight ) is a jump blues song written and recorded by Roy Brown in 1947 . There are numerous cover versions of this piece.

General

Roy Brown - Good Rocking Tonight
Wynonie Harris - Good Rockin 'Tonight

Roy Brown originally offered the song to Wynonie Harris , who declined the piece. So Brown recorded the song with the Bob Ogden Orchestra himself, which was released in 1947 on DeLuxe Records (DeLuxe 1093) and became a respectable hit. Brown's version of the song peaked at number 11 on Billboard magazine's R&B charts . After this success, Harris recognized the piece's potential and took it up. Its version (King 4210) reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B charts and stayed there for half a year.

Harris' version largely stuck to the text of the original, only in the last verse Harris replaced the text with the exclamations "hoy, hoy, hoy" - a phrase that appeared in some jump blues of the time. Musically, he changed the piece to a more rocky version and gave future music researchers work to determine whether this recording would be the first rock 'n' roll song. One critic writes of Harris' version, probably a little too enthusiastically: This is probably the most important recording in the history of rock and roll. Without this record, rock and roll probably never would have happened. ("This is probably the most important recording in the history of rock and roll. Without this recording, rock and roll would probably never have happened.")

The curious cover versions also include the version sung in Spanish by the Mexican band Los Teen Tops from the early 1960s ( Buen rock esta noche ). The Honeydrippers (with Jeff Beck and Robert Plant ) recorded the song in the 1980s under the title Rockin 'at Midnight . Paul McCartney released a version of the song in 1991 on his album Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) . The Doors covered the piece as Good Rockin ' on Full Circle in 1972 .
