Montrose was an American hard rock band led by guitarist Ronnie Montrose, which was founded in 1973 in California . The singer Sammy Hagar became very famous , who left the group in 1976 for a solo career and went to Van Halen in 1986 .

Band history

Montrose is named after its leader and guitarist Ronnie Montrose (1947–2012). He initially hired himself as a session musician with Van Morrison and the Edgar Winter Group . He founded Montrose with Bill Church (bass), Denny Carmassi (drums) and Sammy Hagar (vocals). The first, self-titled album was released in the first year of the band's young history. Although the album never reached a notable chart position, it went platinum in America in 1986 . Bill Church then left the band and was replaced by Alan Fitzgerald.

The successor Paper Money (# 65 on the US Billboard charts) appeared in 1974. Due to tensions with Ronnie Montrose, Hagar left the band shortly afterwards and started a successful solo career. For him, Bob James joined the band and sang the next album Warner Bros. Presents ... Montrose! (1975) a. The producer was Ronnie Montrose himself. The album reached # 79 on the US charts. After the album, Alan Fitzgerald dropped out, he later appeared in the band Night Ranger .

With Randy Jo Hobbs (bass) and Jin Alcivar (keyboards) as replacements, the album Jump on It was created in 1976 . Carmassi then got out and joined Sammy Hagar's newly formed band. Montrose put the band on hold and formed Gamma .

In 1987 he reanimated Montrose with a completely new line-up and released the album Mean .

In 1997 Hagar released the single Little White Lie . The B-side Rock Candy was recorded with the original Montrose line-up.

To promote the 2000 best-of compilation, Ronnie Montrose toured with Chuck Wright (bass, Quiet Riot ), Pat Torpey (drums, Mr. Big ) and singer Keith St. John ( Burning Rain ) in 2002 . Originally a studio album was supposed to be released, but the plans fizzled out.

Ronnie Montrose, who suffered from alcoholism and depression for years and was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 , last played with the synth-rock band Anti-M and shot himself on March 3, 2012.

reception

Montrose are considered the first hard rock band from the USA that could have rivaled the British forefathers Black Sabbath and Deep Purple . The first album is now considered a classic in American rock history and the first heavy metal album from the USA. Montrose is considered one of the most influential American bands of its time. The successor Paper Money was able to match the quality of the debut, but the other albums had less and less the musical innovations of the debut and suffered above all from the musical inconsistency that was already evident in the line-up changes.
