I Wanna Be Your Man ( English I want to be your husband ) is a song that in 1963 by the British band The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were photographed in different versions and published. Most of the song was written by Paul McCartney , but it is copyrighted by Lennon / McCartney . First, the Rolling Stones version was released as a single ; it led to the Rolling Stones' first chart success. Then the Beatles version appeared on the second Beatles album With the Beatles , on which it is the only contribution by drummer Ringo Starr as lead singer.

background

Paul McCartney composed I Wanna Be Your Man especially for Ringo Starr. He deliberately kept the song simple so the less vocal Starr could sing it while playing the drums . Stylistically, McCartney leaned on the song Boys der Shirelles , which Starr had interpreted on the Beatles' first album Please Please Me .

When John Lennon and Paul McCartney were out and about in London on September 10, 1963 , they happened to meet Mick Jagger and Keith Richards . Jagger told them that they were in the studio and needed more song material. McCartney then offered them I Wanna Be Your Man , which, however, was not yet finished at the time. He and Lennon therefore retired to a corner and composed the song to the end in the face of the impressed Jagger and Richards.

admission

Although the song is kept relatively simple, I Wanna Be Your Man took an unusually long time to record . A first version, which was created just a day after the Beatles offered the song to the Rolling Stones, remained unpublished. On September 12, 1963, the band recorded six new takes . In the absence of the Beatles, who were just on vacation, the Beatles producer took George Martin via overdub on an organ for the song. More overdubs followed on October 3 and 23, 1963 before the song was complete.

publication

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones released their recording, which was made on October 7, 1963, on November 1, 1963 (three weeks before the Beatles version) exclusively as a single. Their version reached number 12 on the British singles chart. In later years it appeared on several of the band's compilation albums .

On November 25, 2012, the Rolling Stones opened their tour 50 & Counting , on which they celebrated their 50th stage anniversary, with I Wanna Be Your Man .

The Beatles

I Wanna Be Your Man appeared on November 22, 1963 on the Beatles' second studio album With the Beatles . A version that the band recorded on February 28, 1964 for the BBC show From Us To You , appeared on the 1994 album Live at the BBC . Another recording from January 7, 1964 for the BBC show Saturday Club was unreleased. On April 19, 1964, the Beatles played I Wanna Be Your Man on the television show Around The Beatles . This recording appeared on the 1995 album Anthology 1 .

After its publication, the song was an integral part of the Beatles' concerts for a long time. It was the oldest song the band played at their last concert on August 29, 1966 in Candlestick Park , San Francisco .

Cover versions

Adam Faith and Suzi Quatro covered the song, among others . Ringo Starr sang I Wanna Be Your Man on many of his concerts, and it appeared on several of his live albums. Keith Richards had also added the song to his live repertoire with his band X-Pensive Winos .
