Ron Wood began his music career in the 1960s as a member of the English band The Birds . After a short interlude in 1967 with Santa Barbara Machine Head , he played with the Jeff Beck Group and at times with the band The Creation .

After the Jeff Beck Group broke up in 1969, he joined Small Faces members Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboard) and Kenney Jones (drums), who came after Steve , along with Rod Stewart , the group's singer Marriott's (vocals / guitar) resignation from the band were looking for a replacement. The new formation was called " The Faces " a little later . In the Faces, Ron Wood and Rod Stewart formed a duo similar to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones . He wrote many pieces for the Faces and was also involved in Rod Stewart's first solo albums as a guitarist. The Faces split in 1975.

Rolling Stones

When the Rolling Stones were looking for a successor to guitarist Mick Taylor , who retired in December 1974 , they remembered Ron Wood, whom Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had already supported on his solo album and who was on the Stones song It's Only Rock 'n' Roll des im October released album of the same name was involved. In April 1975 it was announced by the management that Wood would accompany the Stones temporarily as guitarist on the tour through the United States of America, which lasted from June 1 to August 8, 1975. At the end of 1975 he became a permanent member of the band, but financially he was only an employee with a monthly salary. He only became a full member, including the corresponding profit sharing in the company, in 1993. The first Stones album on which he can be heard was Black and Blue (1976).

During the Rolling Stones concerts in 1976 (documented on the album Love You Live ), the management made a positive impression. He also contributed to the success of the album Some Girls .

Disabled by years of alcohol addiction, however, he was unable to take up a steady lead guitar position as Mick Taylor had previously. Over the years Keith Richards, who was never really intended for the role of lead guitarist, took on this role more often over the years; He was considered more of a human riff ('master of the rhythm guitar').

So Ron Wood's role with the Rolling Stones remained that of a rock guitarist with occasional - and also quite appealing - interludes on the slide and pedal steel guitar . He also acted as a mediator and mediator between the intermittent fighters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for relaxation within the band.

Similar to Mick Taylor, Ron Wood is not considered a real Stones member by some Rolling Stones fans, although he has now been with the band for far longer than his two predecessors ( Brian Jones and Mick Taylor) combined.

Other musical projects

Noteworthy are his musical contributions to various projects, such as his appearance in the concert film The Last Waltz by director Martin Scorsese and a performance at the event for Bob Dylan's fiftieth birthday in New York's Madison Square Garden. On the occasion of the Live Aid concert initiated by Bob Geldof in 1985 in aid of Hunger Relief for Africa, he accompanied Bob Dylan on stage in Philadelphia with Keith Richards. On August 13, 1986 and July 26, 1988 , Wood made guest appearances as a musical guest on stage at two Prince after-shows in London. He performed again with Bob Dylan in 1996 in Hyde Park, London, during the Prince's Trust charity event . Every now and then he accompanies his old musical companion Rod Stewart, for example on his Unplugged And Seated on February 5, 1993, with the party. On the 2006 released CD Last Man Standing by Jerry Lee Lewis can be heard Wood as an accompanist. He also works as a singer on the songs Rocking My Life Away and Trouble In My Mind .

Since Jagger and Richards hold the songwriting for the Rolling Stones, Ron Wood released various solo albums.

From 2005 to 2008 Ron Wood had his own independent label in London called Wooden Records. The label, which focuses on house , pop and rock , published records by Wood's daughter Leah Wood, the debut album On The Brink by The Thirst and previously unofficial live material by Ron Wood from the 1970s ( Live From Kilburn - The First Barbarians and Buried Alive - New Barbarians ).

Visual arts

Since childhood, Ron Wood has devoted himself not only to music, but also to the visual arts . Also on the advice of teachers who had noticed his artistic talent, Ron Wood, like his two older brothers, attended Ealing Art College, a former art school in London. As a teenager, he won the top prize in a painting competition on the BBC art television show Sketch Club - a moment of public recognition that he, in retrospect, calls his entry into the world of art. While he sees music as an opportunity to express himself as part of a group, he sees the visual arts as a more personal form of expression.

Wood's paintings , drawings and graphics have been presented to the public at various exhibitions around the world. He often creates portraits of contemporaries, including his bandmates, musicians he knows or admires, friends and family members, as well as self-portraits . Other motifs include animals, landscapes and ballet scenes. Wood uses different materials and techniques, for example, he makes pencil and pastel drawings , oil and acrylic paintings . In the 1980s he began to experiment with printing processes such as woodcut , monotype , etching , screen printing and digital printing and in 1987 worked for several months in a professional printmaking workshop to deepen his knowledge.

In 2009 the London department store Liberty designed a fashion collection in collaboration with Wood, for which three of his paintings were adapted as print motifs. In 2011 Wood began a series of planned 14 hand-painted watches for the British watch manufacturer Bremont . The dial and the inner casing of the clocks should show motifs that are related to his life.

Wood has published two books on his work, which contain illustrations of a selection of his work, as well as explanations and autobiographical anecdotes: The Works (1987, with co-author Bill German) and Every picture tells a story (1998). The latter was published in a limited edition of 2500 hand-signed copies (see Bibliography ). In 2017 another volume was published with illustrations of his works with a foreword by Emmanuel Guigon, director of the Picasso Museum Barcelona, and an afterword by Keith Richards. The book reproduces a total of 377 illustrations of Ron Wood's works and is published by Thames and Hudson.

Radio and television

Since March 31, 2010, Ron Wood has hosted his own radio show called The Ronnie Wood Show , in which he presents his favorite music accompanied by anecdotes and marginal information and occasionally contributes something on the guitar. He often has other musicians as guests in the studio. The hour-long show is broadcast by the UK radio station Absolute Classic Rock . In 2011 she received several awards: At the Sony Radio Academy Awards, Wood was named “Music Radio Personality of the Year”, and at the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards, he was named the best Newcomers ("Newcomer of the Year"), while the show was voted best special- interest program ("Specialist Program of the Year"). Since January 29, 2012, the music program has also been broadcast in the USA via various radio stations affiliated with Premiere Networks , a subsidiary of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment .

A radio show of the same name has been shown since February 24, 2012 as a 10-part television program on the British-Irish pay TV channel Sky Arts of the British Sky Broadcasting Group. In it, Wood welcomes various musicians to jam with them and talk about rock 'n' roll . His first guest was Alice Cooper .

Private

Childhood and youth

Ron Wood was born as the youngest son of a poor Roma family on the western outskirts of London. He spent his childhood in a social housing estate in Yiewsley and on barges. He had two older brothers, Arthur, called Art (* July 7, 1937 - November 3, 2006) and Edward George, called Ted (* June 24, 1939 - September 29, 2003).

Drug and alcohol problems

In the environment in which Ron Wood grew up, alcohol and drugs were common. He allegedly began drinking large quantities of brandy and whiskey at the age of 14 . Since then, both alcohol and drugs have shaped his life again and again, and he claims he never appeared sober at any concert until 2003. Many times he was because of his addiction problems in treatment . In July 2011, he stated that he had not touched alcohol or drugs since his eighth withdrawal the year before, according to media reports, and was convinced that his addiction was now under control.

Relationships

Ron Wood's first wife Krissy Findlay , a former model he was married to from 1971 to 1978, died on June 11, 2005 at the age of 57 in London . An overdose of Valium is believed to be the cause of death . The marriage resulted in son Jesse. From 1985 to 2011 Ron Wood was married to the model Jo Howard, with whom he has the children Jamie, Leah and Tyrone. The reason for the separation and subsequent divorce was the Woods affair with the 41-year-old Ekaterina Ivanova, which began in 2008 and was accompanied by headlines. The relationship with the waitress ended shortly after his arrest in 2009 for an alleged assault on Ivanova in the course of a street argument. Ekaterina Ivanova told the British press that the musician's alcohol problems, which had increased during their life together, had become too much of a burden for her. On December 21, 2012, Ron Wood married the theater producer Sally Humphreys, on May 30, 2016, they became the parents of twin girls Gracie Jane and Alice Rose.

In 2007 his autobiography Ronnie was published . The German translation of the book was published in 2008 by Heyne Verlag under the title Ronnie - die Autobiografie .
