Ronald Frederick "Ronnie" Lane (born April 1, 1946 in Plaistow , London ; † June 4, 1997 in Trinidad , Colorado , USA ), nicknamed Plonk , was a British rock musician who was primarily a bassist, songwriter and founder of the bands Small Faces and The Faces became known.

Life

In 1973 Lane left the Faces to record the hit singles How Come and The Poacher and the album Anymore for Anymore . With his band Slim Chance and a colorful circus and music show - The Passing Show - he traveled through Great Britain in 1974. Financially the company was a disaster .

In 1976 there was a reunion of the Small Faces. Lane left the project during rehearsals. Since there was already a contract with the label , he recorded the highly acclaimed album Rough Mix with Pete Townshend in 1977 , which was a commercial flop .

During this time Lane was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis . Nevertheless, he continued to tour, write songs and make recordings, among others with Eric Clapton .

In 1983, on the initiative of Lane's friend Boo Oldfield, a concert for the benefit of multiple sclerosis research took place at London's Royal Albert Hall , at which, in addition to Lane, such well-known musicians as Eric Clapton , Jimmy Page , Jeff Beck , Steve Winwood , Bill Wyman , Charlie Watts , Kenney Jones , Andy Fairweather-Low, and others contributed. With Joe Cocker and Paul Rodgers added , the group then went on a US tour. Rodgers and Page formed the band The Firm on this occasion .

In 1984 Lane moved to Austin , Texas , where the climate was better for his health. He was still active as a musician and worked with an American edition of Slim Chance. In 1990 he even made a tour in Japan .

His health deteriorated noticeably. He made his last appearance in 1992, with Ron Wood and Ian McLagan . In 1994 he moved to Trinidad , Colorado . Jimmy Page , Ron Wood and Rod Stewart supported him financially to the end.

Ronnie Lane died on June 4, 1997 of complications from pneumonia. In 2001, in his birthplace Plaistow (East London), "Ronnie Lane" was named after him, a 160 meter long north-south street.
