title

The playful album title Black and Blue - in German: "Black and blue (beaten)" - is supposed to refer to the influence of black music on the LP: "Black" for black music and "Blue" for the typical Afro-American blue notes .

music

The song selection on Black and Blue is varied and multifaceted. You can hear funk , blues , rock , jazz and reggae influences. Because of these influences, Black and Blue is known as the “blackest” album of the Stones.

The Stones tested several guitarists during the recording of this album to find a successor for Mick Taylor, who had left the band in 1974. Among them were Jeff Beck , Harvey Mandel (guitar solo in the funky piece Hot Stuff ), Wayne Perkins (guitar in Fool to Cry and solo in Hand of Fate ) and Ron Wood (guitar in the reggae piece Cherry oh baby and his inspired Hey Negrita ). The band ultimately decided on Ron Wood as a new group member.

On Title Melody was Billy Preston with bar-atmospheric piano playing and singing as partner of Mick Jagger involved. At Memory Motel , Mick Jagger and Keith Richards shared the lead vocals ; In addition, both musicians could be heard on the piano in this song, which describes life on tour, with Richard playing the electric piano. In the last song on the album, Crazy Mama , Jagger and Richards played the rock riffs as guitarists. With Fool to Cry , Black and Blue also contains a ballad carried by keyboard sounds.
