Exile on Main St (originally EXILE ON MAIN ST ), for Exile on Main Street (translatable into German as “Banished on Main Street ”), is the tenth studio album by the Rolling Stones released in Great Britain , produced by Jimmy Miller . It was on 22./26. Published May 1972.
History of origin
At the time of its publication Exile on Main St was attacked by many music critics because they could not get used to the rather rough, unfinished-looking production style. In addition, it contains - unlike the previous albums - no pronounced hit songs. Only Tumbling Dice (5th place in the UK, 7th place in the USA) and Happy (22nd place in the USA) were released as singles .
Today the record is considered one of the band's best releases. It is not so much the individual pieces that make the album, but rather the consistency of the song quality and the continuous mood full of power and groove . The mixed voice of Mick Jagger in the background is remarkable . In retrospect, however, he himself is not so convinced of the qualities of the double LP; In a Rolling Stone interview from 1995, he rates the two previous albums higher.
The song Happy , sung by Keith Richards , over the course of time became his “brand song ”, which still has its place in the concert program today. Also Rip This Joint is available in a sung by Keith Richards version, however, was never published in this form. All Down the Line exists in two different versions: Version I on the LP / CD versions is mono, while Version II (US single version) is mixed in stereo.
In early 1971 the Stones had left England for tax reasons and settled in France. From March 1971 the songs were recorded in the damp basement of the Villa Nellcôte, which Keith Richards rented for $ 2,400 a week on Avenue Louise Bordes in Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur (during the occupation by the National Socialists in World War II , that was Building used as Gestapo headquarters). The electricity for the equipment was illegally tapped from a power line running through the villa park. From October 1971, the Stones were investigated for drug trafficking, and in December of the same year the allegations led to Keith Richards being banned from entering France. At that time, the songs were only available as raw material, adding overdubs and final mastering took place in the Sunset Sound Recorders Studios in Los Angeles by May 1972 . Influenced by Gram Parsons , Torn and Frayed ("Tattered and Scuffed") and Loving Cup ("love potion") were created entirely in Los Angeles.
However, some recordings go back to 1969, such as Sweet Virginia ("Sweet Virginia"), Loving Cup , Shine a Light (1969), All Down the Line or Tumbling Dice (1970). In part, the original recordings were used as a basis (Sweet Virginia) , other pieces such as Tumbling Dice (which was created in 1970 as Good Time Women for the album Sticky Fingers ) were re-recorded. The song Shine a Light was the eponymous film by Martin Scorsese about the Rolling Stones.
As with many of their other recordings, the Rolling Stones were supported by numerous guest musicians: Ian Stewart , Dr. John , Billy Preston , Bill Plummer , Nicky Hopkins, and others. For the gospel choir at Let It Loose , the Stones hired Tami Lynn and Shirley Goodman, among others .
Exile on Main St. reached number 1 in the British and US charts and stayed in the charts for 16 and 17 weeks respectively. In the list of the 500 best albums by the music magazine Rolling Stone , the album is number seven.
In 2007 a book by the American journalist Robert Greenfield was published, in which he describes the time when the double album was made in the south of France. The title: Exile on Main St. - A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones (German edition: Exile on Main St. - A hellish summer with the Rolling Stones ).
Universal , the Rolling Stones' new record company, released the revised double LP on May 14, 2010 - as a double CD - and added ten more songs from the recording sessions at the time, including Pass the Wine and Plundered My Soul . As a result, Exile on Main St. returned to the charts in numerous countries and reached number 1 in Great Britain and Norway.
The documentary Stones in Exile by Stephen Kijak was published around the same time , in which, in addition to the Rolling Stones, former band members Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman report on the making of the album.
