Grrr! (own spelling GRRR! ) is the 29th  compilation album by the British rock band The Rolling Stones . It was available in Europe on November 9, 2012 before being released worldwide on November 12, 2012.

Creation and publication

The compilation was put together on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the band. The bonus tracks on Grrr! the songs Doom and Gloom and One More Shot, recorded in August 2012 . The compilation was released in three CD versions of different sizes: as a double CD, a triple CD and a five-CD. It was also released on LP and as a download.

The cover , which shows a gorilla with red lips and a sticking out tongue, the tongue-and-lips logo of the Rolling Stones, was designed by Walton Ford . Ford had been commissioned by Mick Jagger to design a logo to celebrate the band's anniversary, using his King Kong paintings from 2011. His concept was to use the combination of the Tongue-and-Lips logo and a King Kong image to represent the extent of the band's achievements in the past 50 years, which seemed to him monstrous: "I saw the Rolling Stones as a kind of silverback [ .] [...] All of the King Kong metaphors and all of that are apt ”.

The album was announced in September 2012 as part of a large-scale advertising campaign that used augmented reality . Using the free uView app , fans with smartphones or other compatible devices should scan the image of a pair of eyes on one of the Rolling Stones websites to gradually receive information about news. Among other things, Rolling Stones music and the growling of an animal could be heard when using the app. Eyes and growl revealed themselves ultimately as the gorilla from the album art associated with the per uview as 3D - animation could 'be brought to life. For the campaign, the tongue logo and locations in 50 cities around the world such as the Elizabeth Tower and the Brandenburg Gate were linked to gorilla animated films in the context of a competition . These were activated by scanning a location / building or logo using uView . The band's website commented on the use of the app: "The use of one of the most modern forms of mobile technology currently available consolidates the Rolling Stones' status as one of the most innovative bands in the world, which is as relevant as ever." Under the name "GRRRegory" The gorilla received its own Twitter account, which was used to distribute news about the band from October.

reception

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic thinks that the compilation offers a good overview of the Rolling Stones' long career, although not all important pieces are included even on the Super Deluxe Edition. Ulf Kubanke from laut.de criticizes the selection of some inferior pieces, but praises the stylistic range of the compilation. Helen Brown of the Daily Telegraph pulls Grrr! the compilation Forty Licks , published ten years earlier .

Walton Ford was exposed to the negative voices of some Rolling Stones fans who did not like the album cover and defended himself against them with the words: “A lot of people didn't like it at all. […] I was glad they didn't like it. I mean, the last people I wanted to please were Rolling Stones fans. [...] You are really vicious. It is a general rule that they have a fan base who just always seems to be upset with the Rolling Stones for many reasons. […] [A] hen the Rolling Stones did their best job, they were one step ahead of the people they loved so much. I thought, 'How cool that I'm getting the chance to piss off your fans?' "
