You Got the Silver is a very blues and country music oriented ballad by the Jagger / Richards team of authors . It appeared for the first time interpreted by the British rock group The Rolling Stones in 1969 on their album Let It Bleed .

The piece stands out from the many other songs of the Rolling Stones in that it was the first recording of the Stones in which the guitarist of the band, Keith Richards , did the main vocals alone. Before that, Richards had sung two songs with Jagger ( Something Happened to Me Yesterday and Salt of the Earth ; the respective closing songs of the albums Between the Buttons and Beggars Banquet ).

Composition and text

Richards is said to have written the piece mostly by himself, so music and the text. As with all pieces, however, Jagger / Richards is specified as the author duo . A recording was made with Jagger singing the lead vocals, but the band and producer Jimmy Miller decided to use the recording for the album, with Richards singing the lyrics. This is about the fact that the lyrical self has made itself somewhat, if not very dependent on its partner in the course of the relationship. Text passages like: Tell me, honey, what will I do // When I'm hungry and thirsty too // Feeling foolish, and that's for sure // Just waiting here at your kitchen door? . The text is also about other aspects of the love story. The song is also said to be about Richard's then girlfriend Anita Pallenberg .

occupation

You Got the Silver became the last recording by the Rolling Stones to feature founding member and former bandleader Brian Jones. Singer Mick Jagger, on the other hand, does not take part in the recording that can be found on the album. A version in which Jagger sings the lead vocals is unofficially circulating as a bootleg in fan circles and has a high collector's value.

Live performances

The Rolling Stones began performing the piece live on a regular basis late; In 1999 it was played repeatedly during the No Security Tour . They picked it up again for the tour for the album A Bigger Bang . Richards' performance at the Beacon Theater was recorded live on stage by film director Martin Scorsese during the filming of the concert film Shine a Light . This live version can also be found on the Shine a Light soundtrack album.

reception

The ballad was also used in Michelangelo Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point . You Got the Silver is considered a successful song on an outstanding album by fans and critics . The Rolling Stone performs the piece at number 61 of its list of the 100 largest Rolling Stones songs . For Allmusic, however , the song is an “acceptable filler”, on which the work of Richards on the slide guitar , the piano playing by Hopkins and “strange noises” left the stamp of the Stones.
