Between the Buttons is the fifth in the UK and the seventh studio album by the Rolling Stones to be released in the US .

Album history

Recorded in Los Angeles in August 1966 and in London in November 1966, the Rolling Stones took a step further from their rhythm and blues roots with Between the Buttons . Under the impact of recent publications by the Beatles ( Revolver ), the Beach Boys ( Pet Sounds ) , as well as Bob Dylan ( Blonde on Blonde ), which had expanded within a few months immensely the boundaries of rock music, is believed Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at We were forced to continue on the path started with Aftermath . The songs on Between the Buttons also show the influence of British beat bands such as the Kinks , but also for the first time elements of country and folk . The lyrics to Something Happened to Me Yesterday also suggest that drugs also fascinate and influence the band members.

Brian Jones experimented again with numerous instruments such as the harmonica , trombone , recorder and banjo . The influence of producer Andrew Loog Oldham can be clearly heard. In songs like Yesterday's Papers , My Obsession and Complicated , the Phil Spector admirer created powerful walls of sound. It was the last album he produced for the Stones; The Stones were responsible for the next album, and Jimmy Miller took over the production of the Beggars Banquet album .

Similar to Aftermath , the American and British versions of the album are different. The British edition was published on January 20, 1967, a week earlier the songs Let's Spend the Night Together (3rd place in England, only 55th place in the USA, 1st place in Germany) and Ruby Tuesday (3rd place in England, place 1 in the USA) was released as a so-called double A-side single. Both singles are only included in the American version of Between the Buttons , released on February 11, 1967 . Back Street Girl and Please Go Home are missing here, these songs can be heard on the Flowers compilation, published six months later . Future Rolling Stones albums were only released in one version.

The cover photo (which is identical in both versions) comes from the British photographer Gered Mankowitz , who has been part of the rock music scene since the 1960s and whose unmistakable style helped shape the band's image early on. He is currently represented with a permanent exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The picture was taken in the early hours of the morning with a camera lens smeared with petroleum jelly, the stones look a bit sleepy on the picture and look as if the photographer was surprised.

The LP, which was only partially positively assessed by the critics at the time, is now considered one of the band's better albums, even if Mick Jagger describes the pop-heavy Between the Buttons in retrospect as a step in the wrong direction. The publication reached number 3 in the UK and number 2 in the US and Germany.

Nicky Hopkins ( piano ), Jack Nitzsche (piano, harpsichord , percussion and brass instruments ) and Ian Stewart ( piano and organ ) contributed to the album .

The British version was released on Decca (Mono, LK 4852; Stereo, SKL 4852) on January 20, 1967. The American version on London Records on February 11, 1967 (mono, LL 3499; stereo, PS 499).
