Out of Our Heads is the third UK and fourth US studio album by the Rolling Stones . It was issued in the US on July 30th and in Great Britain on September 24th, 1965. It is the first release of the Rolling Stones, which - with the exception of the track I'm Alright , which was recorded live in the UK - only contains songs that were recorded in American studios.

History of the album

As usual with the Stones in those years, two different versions with different record sleeves were brought onto the market. Both versions were published for the first time in mono and (electronic) stereo. The American version was originally published in Germany in 1965. This was only replaced by the British version in 1968. The American edition contains the two single hits from the first half of 1965, The Last Time and (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, as well as the respective B-side, otherwise both versions contain a collection of songs that had been written since November 1964.

Oh, Baby (We Got a Good Thing Going) and Heart of Stone were featured in the US compilation The Rolling Stones, Now! The remaining songs, which are missing from the American edition of Out of Our Heads , were submitted in November 1965 with the compilation December's Children (And Everybody's) only published in the USA - with the same cover as the British version of Out of Our Heads .

The recordings for the American and German cover variants came from the photo session with British photographer David Bailey for the albums The Rolling Stones No. 2 and 12 × 5 from 1964, while for the British edition of Out of Our Heads - and for December's Children - the British photographer Gered Mankowitz (misspelled as "Gerard Mankowitz" on the LP) is responsible.

The success of the title song (I Can not Get No) Satisfaction benefiting was Out of Our Heads , the first album by the Rolling Stones, the No. 1 on the American LP-Charts (which again only in 1971 with the release of the album Sticky Fingers succeed should). The album stayed in the US charts for 35 weeks. Due to the later release date, the band was denied a first place in the English charts for the first time: On August 6th, the Beatles had their album Help! released, and the Stones had to settle for second place in England. The album also came in at number 2 behind the Beatles in the German LP charts.

In the course of 1965 the songwriting duo Jagger / Richards developed more of their own profile; Songs like Heart of Stone and I'm Free showed the band's potential. The newly gained self-confidence may also have been one of the reasons why Out of Our Heads was the last release of the band that contained songs with the songwriter pseudonym Nanker / Phelge . The album was also the last LP of the band, mostly rhythm and blues - cover versions contained. Ian Stewart ( piano , marimbas ), Jack Nitzsche ( organ , piano, percussion ) and Phil Spector , who plays electric bass ("Zoom Bass") on Play With Fire, contributed to the recordings .

The American Rolling Stone magazine ranks the US version of Out of Our Heads at number 114 in its list of the 500 best albums of all time .
