12 × 5 is the second Rolling Stones studio album released in the US . It was released on October 17, 1964, just under five months after the American version of their debut album, England's Newest Hit Makers, was released .

Album history

12 × 5 follows the proven concept of the previous album , the song material consists of rhythm and blues cover versions as well as own compositions, some of which are hidden behind the double pseudonym Nanker / Phelge . It was the first release of the Rolling Stones in the USA, for which there was no similar album for the British market.

On August 14, 1964, the record company Decca, responsible for distribution in Great Britain, had released the five-song EP Five by Five , recorded on June 11, 1964 at Chess Studios in Chicago. Since an EP was not considered a lucrative format in the USA, the Rolling Stones' record company London Records, which was responsible for the American market, extended the EP to the usual LP format with seven additional songs, recorded between February and September 1964.

The record sleeve shows the five band members and the lettering at the bottom right: The Rolling Stones 12x5 . In January 1965, Decca Records used the cover of the band's second long-playing record in the UK, The Rolling Stones No. 2 , the same shot by British photographer David Bailey , but without lettering like on the debut album - an idea by Andrew Loog Oldham , the band's young manager.

The album was a huge commercial success for the Rolling Stones and peaked at number 3 on the American charts.
