Dirty Work is the Rolling Stones' 18th album from 1986.

General information

The album was released on March 24, 1986 on CBS Records and was produced by Steve Lillywhite with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards . It reached number 4 on the charts in the United States and Great Britain and stayed there for 15 and ten weeks respectively. Dirty Work was recorded in Paris and New York; the album was temporarily titled 19 Stitches . The single Harlem Shuffle reached number 5 in England.

It is seen by critics as a rather average Rolling Stones album. One reason for this is the bad relationship between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at the time, which is shown in the video for One Hit (to the Body) . Other titles such as Fight, Winning Ugly and Dirty Work also express the dissatisfied and aggressive mood.

Mick Jagger was busy promoting his first solo album She's the Boss and was often absent from the recording sessions, so Keith Richards became more and more the driving force in the studio. He appeared on Dirty Work for the first time as lead singer on two songs on a Rolling Stones album - in the reggae piece Too Rude and in the ballad Sleep Tonight . Various musicians, including Jimmy Page as guitarist in One Hit (to the Body) and Tom Waits and Bobby Womack in Sleep Tonight , supported the Stones in the studio.

The Rolling Stones dedicated the album to their recently deceased pianist Ian Stewart , and at the end of the album a short boogie-woogie piece by Ian Stewart can be heard.
