Paint It Black is a single released by the Rolling Stones on May 7, 1966 in the United States and on May 13, 1966 in Great Britain , which reached number 1 in the charts in both countries (The single accidentally came first with Paint It, Black ) . The song is also included on the US version of the album Aftermath . Second place was achieved in the German and Austrian charts.

composition

According to the booklet, the song, which can be translated as “Mach alles schwarz!”, Is only ascribed to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards , although all band members played a key role in its creation, especially Bill Wyman and Brian Jones . Jagger and Richards' original concept was slow soul from the point of view of a melancholy person who, according to their mood, wants to see everything, even the sun, in black.

The song originated when bassist Wyman was playing an organ during a recording session to parody former co-manager and organ player Eric Easton. Charlie Watts agreed to a Middle Eastern beat rhythm, which formed the basis for the later song. Brian Jones then intoned the striking sitar - reef , and Jagger wrote the lyrics about a man who mourns his dead girlfriend.

In a 1995 interview, Jagger described Paint It Black as "a kind of Turkish song". Bir Eylül Akşamı ('An Evening in September'), published in 1962 by Erkin Koray , has similarities.

The band's next number 1 hit in England wasn't until almost exactly two years later with the single Jumpin 'Jack Flash released on May 24, 1968 .

Cultural influence

The song was often associated with the Vietnam War through its use in the credits of the film Full Metal Jacket and in the opening credits of the series NAM - Dienst in Vietnam . The piece can also be heard in the film Aus Liebe zum Spiel with Kevin Costner , in the credits of the thriller On behalf of the Devil with Al Pacino and the pilot episode by Nip / Tuck . The song was also used in the computer games Conflict: Vietnam, Twisted Metal: Black , Guitar Hero III, and Mafia III . The song is also used in the trailer for the Call of Duty: Black Ops III game. A cover version of the song (interpreted by Gob ) plays an important role in the film Echoes . Another version without vocals was set to music by Ramin Djawadi for the TV series Westworld in 2016 .
